I don't want any Brits to mistake my intention here. I love England, Scotland, Wales and the whole thing. I love the EPL, English humour, Hatton, Calzaghe, the EPL, and a million other things from the Isles. Steven Gerrard is my hero. But please do not make threads about Harrison, Skelton, or any other current heavies as if they were worth the attention of anyone beyond your national borders. It reeks of the worst kind of nationalism; these are not contenders.

Why not make a thread about the brits? Both Harrison and Skelton are better than our American titleholder, Briggs.Comment

What do you think would have happened if Sergei had defended against Audley Harrison?
Anyway I want to leave this alone, because I hate to hate, and I have a dozen or so posts already over the past six months about such topics.
By the way, I don't like Briggs that much, but he is being vastly underestimated in these parts right about now. We all had SL pegged for a tought mother****er, and he is, but he was way too aware of Briggs' power Saturday.Comment

If Sergei defended against Harrison in the shape he was in he would probably win or close a close decision in a boring, boring fight.
That is the point, it isn't so much what Briggs did that won him the fight but the fact that Sergei was completely out of it from the opening bell. Even before he got hit (actually the fact that he DID get hit and hurt so early by Briggs, who is slower and throws wider punches than Brewster) he looked soft, both around the waist and in his body language.
Sergei gave that fight away period. Most heavyweights in the top 15 would have had a great chance of upsetting Sergei that night.Comment

So you're saying Audley Harrison, who couldn't beat an atrocious version of Dominick Guinn [and was beaten comfortably too] could beat Briggs? Skelton is little better, his only win of note being a win against possibly the worst version of Danny Williams there has been. Harrison went down like a ton of bricks from a cuff around the ear from Williams, the guy doesn't appear to have any courage. Harrison would probably lose through sheer fright against Briggs.
Briggs is by no means a great heavyweight, and the division is very poor as we all know. But to say that two guys who have never even won a European title, or shown any sort of quality, could beat a world champion, is a bit silly.
A person can be the most intelligent, knowledgeable, witty person in the world, but when they let personal preferences get in the way of being impartial, their views and opinions become less important and worthy.
Like a lot of people, I don't particularly like guys like James Toney or Floyd Mayweather in a personality/attitude sense, but I can still acknowledge how good they are, and not show any bitterness when I believe they've fairly won a fight or put on a good performance. Agenda's can also be made because of a fighters nationality and/or race. That is also a very negative attitude to have.
One last thing i'd like to say is this: Would a lot of people pick the same fighter to win a fight if their house or life was on the line? I think not. Anyone can throw around a lot of nonsense without any consequences. Freedom of speech can be a good and bad thing and my speech has just ended.Comment

Basically Briggs did not impress me with that win at ALL. That was the least impressive knockout win, and one of the worst title fights, I've seen since I started watching boxing. Usually a last second knockout win like that should be an exciting moment where you think "Holy ****, I can't believe that just happened!". In that fight when Sergei was knocked out at the last second it was like, great one second less of that I have to watch.
Worst title fight to end in a knockout ever.
That being said, I would back anyone with a solid chin, stamina, boxing skills, and the intelligence to use them against Briggs because they have a good enough chance of decisioning him. I'm not saying Harrison beats him with no trouble or anything but he has a shot, and I don't think I can say the same for Harrison vs. Valuev, Wlad, or even Maskaev. These guys all cream Harrison, probably cause him to run right out of the ring. With Briggs he actually has a shot at winning a title. I do not want to see that. It's bad enough Briggs has a belt around his waist again; I don't want to see Harrison with one.Comment
