Its long but worth it!
Most of you will say that how would he have made a difference when Floyd shut him out anyway but I think it may have made a big differnce in Floyd's style of fight. One thing that really threw me off about his camp was the abscence of Roger. I thought the whole time that Roger would run the camp and set the game plan but just not be at the fight but instead they didnt even let him run the camp. Now that I think of it, it may have been because he was locked up but Im not for sure.
Here is why it changes things. Floyd was trained by his dad his whole life and his dad is a defensive trainer. Then after the Chico fight Roger became his trainer and he is a offensive trainer. Floyd was great with his dad but often times was called a boring fighter. He never stayed offensive and he never wanted to mix it up. Then Roger came and there was a grace period. Those first few fights with Roger he beat the elite guys but he often looked boring & bad in doing it. You could tell that Roger was trying to teach him to be offensive but Floyd was scared to commit to it because he had been taught differently since he was a little boy.
Thats why till this day I think Castillo gave him problems. Floyd was so scared to be offensive back then. When he traded with Castillo he would get the best of him just like he does now but he would only do it for a second and then get on his bike. After that he had the Sosa fight. He killed Sosa and couldve easily stopped him but he was too scared to stay offensive. He had him hurt every time he went offensive but when then go defensive again. In the post fight interview with Merchant he even said that he was a defensive fighter but he didnt say it in a bragging way, he said it with shame like he was dissapointed that his fights were looking boring and that he couldnt stop guys.
Then the N'Dou fight came next and thats when he finaly went all out. He used his D and boxed but he stayed offensive and threw alot of punches and came away with the KO. He saw that it worked and he liked it. Ever since that fight he has been super offensive and has never been boring. I remember when he first moved up to 140 he was fighting offensive & the HBO guys were shocked. Manny Steward said that maybe he wants to use this style at the higher weights. How much since does that make? Why would he want to sit down on his punches and trade more against bigger guys? That wasnt it, it was just that he had finally fully converted to his uncle's style.
Thats why I hate it when people call Floyd boring because they still have there mind set on the old Floyd. He never fights that way anymore. Every fight since the N'Dou fight he has walked guys down and even the couple of fights when he boxed like Gatti & N'Dou, he still stayed offensive and threw alot of punches. Now comes the Baldy fight and Roger isnt in the camp. Now Floyd looks like the old Floyd who boxes but doesnt want to go offensive at all? We will never fully know the truth because Baldy was a big guy so this may have been Roger's game plan also but I seriously doubt it. I bet that if Roger ran this camp then Floyd wouldve been much more aggressive. He's still great when he's defensive and he's may even be harder to beat but it looks boring and doesnt sell tickets. It makes fans boo.
