I've lost a lot of respect for Joe Cortez...

Before yesterday, I was of the opinion that Joe Cortez was the best referee in top-level boxing, blessed with brilliant judgement and excellent authority over proceedings. But after the Paul Williams fight against Pakua last night, what was he thinking? There was a case for the fight being stopped in the second round, and in the fifth I've rarely seen a fighter take so many flush shots to the head.

It was disgusting, to be honest. The corner didn't distinguish themselves by any means, but they're going to keep their boxer in for as long as humanly possible in such a high profile fight for Pakau. Cortez has got more fight experience in his little toe, and to say he should have known better is a vast understatement.

I came down on Cortez after Ouma-Phillips II for the same reason in this thread:

I have to agree. Cortez is slipping. That fight should have been stopped at least two rounds before it was.

I never saw that fight, but it kind of sounds like a similar situation. Another question is; how many referees are there left that oversee the elite fights that are actually any good? Kenny Bayliss is probably the best at the moment for my money.
