Israeli heavyweight hope Roman Greenberg retained the IBO I/C title with an impressive sixth round knockout of Russian Alexei Varakin. Greenberg ended matters with a single punch, a right upercut and Varakin went out flat on his back. However, up until then it had been a tough struggle for Greenberg and in the fourth it looked like an upset was in the making. Roman appeared to be tiring and didnīt seem to know how to handle his opponentīs wide left hook and right hand. There also appeared to be some kind of conflict with British trainer and chief cornerman Jim Evans. It was messy and hardfought with both loading up on their punches and missing a lot. Varakin always looked dangerous and the ending came right out of the blue. [details]

It was far from an impressive victory. Greenberg hasn't realy improved in his last bouts and it makes me wonder if he still can improve. He is a lazy fighter and has lots of bad habits. I didn't see the Ko because I switched channel (the Hofmann - Koc bout went head-to-head on another channel). The fight was pretty bad. Varakin is a very limited fighter, yet he managed to hit Greenberg with his wild swinging right hand on a number of occasions.
My opinion is that Greenberg will never be a Top20 fighter if he doesn't improve seriously in his next 2-3 fights. So far "Israeli heavyweight hope" is a very fitting description for him.Comment
