    The Official Floyd Patterson Thread

Floyd Patterson is one of the most compelling stories in boxing, a sport in which us writers are drawn to the human element of the game. Patterson provided a specimen of a fighter who was as human as you and I.

He once criticised himself as a "coward", but anyone who was able to get up as many times as he did had a ton of balls. After losing a dubious decision to Joey Maxim for the 175 title, he moved up in 1956 and KO'ed Archie Moore to become the youngest heavyweight champion ever at 21. He lost it to the aloof Ingemar Johansen, getting bounced off the canvas 7 times in 3 rounds before the ref stopped the action. He returned in brutal fashion, destroying the Swede in the return to become the first champion to regain the title. After a scintillating rubber match that featured a first round that was simply breathtaking, he met his master in Sonny Liston, who stopped him twice in a total of 5 minutes to lose the title.

After the first loss, in which it was clearly a case of man against child, Patterson donned a disguise and escaped back to his training camp, where he stayed to avoid media. The second time around, Patterson came out to see if he had any shot, found out he didn't, went down, got up and then stayed down after absorbing tremendous punishment from a much stronger man.

Patterson came back with one of his most entertaining performances, besting George Chuvalo over 15 to earn a crazk at the new champ, Muhammad Ali. Patterson took the stance that he was America's Hope to rid the heavyweight division of an anti-American ****** who had betrayed his friend Malcolm X and was with the Nation of Islam, who he felt were the equivalent of shaking hands with the KKK. Patterson was an integrationist, a poster boy for the NAACP. Ali ruthlessly branded him the great white hope, a white man's favorite and a "good negro".

Ali wooped the man, ending the bout in 12 brutal rounds. When the referee waived off the bout, Patterson shook his head as to say that he didn't want the ref to intercede. He said that he wanted to get knocked out by a clean punch and go down like a champion, much in the way Archie Moore wanted to take the ten count like a champ.

After Ali went into exile in '67, Patterson dropped a decision to Jimmy Ellis in the WBA Heavyweight tournament and never was a serious contender again.

In his later years, Patterson presided as the commissioner of the NY State Boxing Commission, before an appearance in front of the grand jury determined that he had suffered severe memory impairment and stepped down. The Bedford Stuyvesant native died last year, a hero who proved that even the greats shed tears.

Exactly, prescribing to the views of the nation of islam in this day and age arent nessecary because of the fact that their habit of putting black people first on EVERY SUBJECT hurts the very purpose of islam in the first place.

That **** is mostly on the east coast and im from the west, out here at least..i wouldnt subscribe to any of those views, and i would never try to say that the black man is so divine that everyone else is left in the dark while black people are the chosen people etc etc, those views in this day and age are unquestionably racist. However during times of hardship and frustration in the 50's and 60's i could see how that ideology would empower a people, but this is a new day and there is no need to feel like divine supremacy will make you a better person somehow.

But the article is great though, not enough talk about floyd patterson anymore =(.

Patterson was a bad man..he whipped 100'ds of fighter, more bigger than him...here he was this lil bitty heavyweight knockin dudes out left and right..I felt bad when I saw the entire Ali thing...He was definetly out of line..you never question another mans religion...he did and he paid the ultimate price...Ali whipped his "A" convincingly...but hey, he is definitely an all-time great..some may even argue he's the greatest...

i think there gangs and NOI came out because of the white racism and how they treat them. so this Eljah Mohammed controled them by fear and hate so he could get what he wants.

and many of the gang such as the crips,blood,ms-13,...etc started the same way. no particular the white racism stuff but even from how the other race and nationality treated them.

every action there is a reaction

patterson had a bad back in the first fight with ali that meant he did nt have much of a chance, and he should have won that ellis fight, he would have been a 3 times heavyweight title holder then.

Floyd Patterson is one of my all time heroes, maybe one of the tops for me. I read his book "Victory over Myself", and I had never before identified with another person like I did with Patterson. He was a shy kid who came from humble beginnings, and he didn't know much about the world around him and how to cope. I too came from the ****** and though I was smart, I had a hard time figuring out why things were the way they were. He used to run away and hide in subways so he could alleviate the stress of his parents who couldn't support the big family they had. I ran away to Philadelphia, New York City, and Newark cuz I felt bad about giving my Mom stress when I was a kid. He was a juvenile delinquent who went to a reform school and discovered the way the world could be if you readjust your mindset. I was put in a reform school at 15 where I found out the importance of not being bitter and angry with the world. Reading the book he wrote was like reading my own life story.

There is a whole theory that Malcolm X was killed by his ex-comrades after he visited Mecca and realised that his hate ways were wrong.

I essentially do not agree with you.
It is very easy to control people with hate.
AN excellent example would be Hitler, he ruled the germans through the hate and racial superiority ideas.
