i saw only a brief clip of the interview and the one thing that bothered me was that floyd could not give kenny a straight answer. but then i realized this: floyd is a professional athlete and pro athletes never ever give straight answers, especially when they have egos bigger than the moon (like floyd).

you're either white or mexican because me being black he doesn't "condescend" to me. he sounds like someone with supreme confidence in his ablities. the whole uppity ****** routine is coming from your own self insecurities
because you're black means that your mind works differently than everyone elses'? bull****!

floyd will never be wildly popular..not in this era. Boxing isnt number one, hes not a one punch KO artist, hes from america, hes black, and those things play against him. Sugar Ray Leonard was popular during a time in boxing when people cared and personality mattered alot more than it does now as far as being all cool and nice and friendly, there was alot more at stake.
what???? man, are you serious? being black in boxing plays against him? and being american? heelllll no! it's his attitude.

his personality matters quite a bit. why else do you think many people here are not big fans of his? most everyone here acknowledges that mayweather has at least excellent boxing skills, but how many people really want to be a fan of a guy who kisses his own ass? not many.

that comment was just so wrong on so many levels.
be realistic here..fuller maxim graziano basilo gavilan lamotta turpin were good for their time...they would get slaughtered today..other then turpkin and gavilan who had a different style still not good the rest of the guys were no more then bigger versions of arturo gatti..no speed bad reflexes but tuff

one more thing, kenny again showed how ******ed he was (in boxing terms) by mentioning miguel cotto as the WBA welter champ (cotto's not there yet). and im sure floyd gives a good **** about kermit cintron who just won a bull**** title.

that's all that mattered. he fought good comp in his days. i wouldn't go so far as to say that nearly everybody that robinson fought would get massacred now as you believe.

i guess that just comes down to opinion.

im pretty sure that was kenny just blatantly baiting mayweather into getting out of character. he looked like he was up to no good from the start. props to ESPN for not having someone else do the interview even knowing it would go bad.

                    Black Jesus,
just read your thread and i think you made some interesting points. as it happens, i don't agree entirely with what you've written, but your points are interesting nonetheless. I have another opinion regarding floyd's popularity (or lackthereof) which i think trumps everything else and it has nothing to do with race, attitude, etc...
For me, i think it has to do with how the american people view boxing. to a lot of people boxing is not a sport, it is entertainment. there's football, baseball, basketball as the top 3. there are trading cards, jerseys, fantasy leagues, etc... people play these sports as kids, in high school, and in college!
these sports are part of most sports fans lives; boxing isn't.
in other countries boxing is right up there with soccer (think about trinidad and cotto. as big as they are here they are much bigger in pr). where would boxing be rated here in terms of popularity, behind hockey?
most people (i say "people" and refer to the casual fan, not a real boxing fan) just want to see blood and knockouts, so they only pay attention to fighters who can provide them. case in point, a washed up mike tyson fights lennox lewis; before the fight when asking for predictions people who are fight fans gave tyson no more than a puncher's chance, while random celebrities who don't know much about boxing but showed up to the fight, pick tyson.
this isn't to say that the issues like race and era are irrelevant, but imho it doesnt get much whiter than spadafora and if somehow he was as good/successful as floyd, i dont think he'd be popular either; why? just not "entertaining". gatti would be gatti regardless of race and ethnicity.
floyd can be the biggest **** on the planet, but if he was puttin kids out like say, trinidad was, he'd be HUGE right now.

When Ali was talking trash back in the day he was hated by most. Writers & broadcasters like Brian Kenny wanted Sonny Liston or others to KO his ass because of his mouth. Ali finally was embraced by everyone toward the end of his career.
