Manager Frank Espinoza says that the surgery for former WBA super flyweight champion Martin Castillo was a successful one.
“Doctor Hicks confirmed after he had shaved the bone off of both eyes down. He said his scar tissue was so tough that he couldn't even cut it with his knife. He had to go in there with a laser and open it up. But he said he had bad scar tissue, he had some blood vessels that he repaired also." Castillo, who lost his title after his bout with Nobou Nashiro was stopped on cuts in the tenth round this past summer, is known as a bleeder. "He said he had to go down four layers of stitches.”
Ouch.
“He said he should be fine. They take out the stitches Thursday and then he'll be ready for activity within three weeks and within six weeks he should be ready to fight for his world title again."
As for Israel Vazquez, The Ring 122-pound king, Espinoza says: "We know he's going to come back in 2007, that's for sure. But we don't know for sure what month. It's going to be the early part of the year. We'll have to discuss it with Sycuan Ringside Promotions and Golden Boy."
