I tipped Kevin Mitchell to be Britain's next superstar five years ago, I loved his sharp punching, streetfighting type moves and punches and do-or-die attitude, and he was a proper ****ney. But he's been over-shadowed since the summer of '04.. thanks to Amir Khan.
Last night, though, Mitchell put in his best pro performance thus far by far IMO, proving that he wasn't just a three-round fighter who lacked strength at pro level, for six rounds Mitchell boxed beautifully - ****ing beautifully! Everything was there, speed, timing, spite, and composure I've never seen from him before.
On that form any super-featherweight in the world would of had a tough time with him, left hand leads landed every time, foot speed I haven't seen from him before, in and out, punch-picking, left uppercuts to body and head, was a joy to watch.
Ofcourse, it was inevitable he got dragged into his streetfighting tendancies, and caught with right hands which he always has done since he was a kid, but the times he managed to whack his thinking head back on he started schooling again, releasing that effective jab, using every inch of the ring, not being touched, and too sharp in release, timing, foot, everything.. world-class sharpness, no question whatsover he's going all the way. He has showed that he can switch into boxer mode if need be, a different dimension. He's a future world champ and star.
You Yanks will like him, when he gets there. An East End limey from a council estate, but really nice kid, engaging personality - loves Scarface and pirahna fish, exciting at brawling AND the skills to match. He was said to be the hottest thing to come out of London since Nigel Benn - it's now confirmed. Think Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, if you like.
