Judges Martin and Leonel Mercado have been suspended for life by the Colombian Boxing Federation as a result of their highly controversial scoring that favored local boxer Irene "Mambeco" Pacheco in Baranquilla, Colombia. The bout, which took place Saturday night, was for the the interim WBO bantamweight world title and most observers saw young Leon Moore (now 16-1, 15 K0s) winning the fight. Moore had Pacheco on the verge of being kayoed in the 11th round. Both judges (who are brothers) voted 115-113 in favor of the touted local idol Pacheco. "I do believe we will appeal the verdict or ask for a rematch in another venue," declared Moore's manager Sam Layne.
--------------
We all remember Pacheco as the long time former flyweight titlist who was the vehicle to which Vic Darchinyan became champion. I think this sets a great precedent, atleast in South America, that you cannot compromise the integrity of the sport. Inept judging should be treated like any other job in which the employee is utterly incompetent: YOU GET ****ING FIRED!!!
Now, if only we can get Duane Ford shipped to Colombia.
