Archie Moore was more of a boxer, he didn't try to go in there and impose himself on opponents, it wasnt his style. With a guy who would wait on him a little, Robinson would usually get the better of. Keep in mind that Moore usually weighed in under the limit.

Robinson's best weight was at Welter, and no it wouldn't be a '******' match up because back in the mid fifties boxing had a bigger audiance than today, therefore a marquee fight like this would have meant big money at the gate. Plus Robinson would have made history by moving up and whooping Moore in the LHW division. Robinson lost to Paul 'Putty Hands' Pender in what had to be the biggest upset of that era, which clearly indicated that his skills were slipping. That being said, even though bigger doesn't necessarily mean better, I do agree with you that Archie would have beaten Robinson, simply because Archie was technicaly versed well enough to make it a possibility.

robinson beat joey maxim, the 175 lb champ, well, he would have beaten him if the heat hadn;t caught up to sugar. however, archie moore is the maybe the greatest lt hw of all time. i see sugar having a lot of trouble with moore, even though archie did come in under the weight limit - i think he was usually closer to 170, he is a lot bigger and stronger than the prime sugar ray and a lot better boxer than joey maxim ever was. moore would stop robinson, probably late in the fight

You must be naive if you think the good old days were good, there was nothing good about them.

When men have any form of competitive success they become prone to a condition which has come to be known as the "Conquerer's Syndrome." They begin to believe in their own infalibility. Ray Robinson was a textbook case and if you read his biography you will see it. He actually began to believe that he owned the middleweight title and whenever he lost it, the title was on loan! He would become quite annoyed at the press for interviewing his victorious opponents as he considered himself to be the true champion.

Yeah, either way you put it, these two fighters were phomenal. In my opinion this fight would have been legendary.

In "those days"? I fail to see how today is much better. It was only a few years ago when the weigh-in for the Gatti-Gamache fight was fixed, almost resulting in Gamache's death.

There's always been a ton of corruption in boxing, sports, and the rest of the free world as well. That's only going to change when men with integrity rise to power as opposed to those who happen to come from wealthy families or who have the right connections.

You know, all these hundreds of years and it's still an aristocracy, and now, just as then, might doesn't make right. The wealthy aren't neccesarily the just but they still control everything. It's like Larry Holmes (I think) once said, boxing is a game where the mice rule over the lions.

The boxers may be the stars in the fans eyes but sometimes they're just pawns on the chessboards of larger, more powerful en******.

Yeah things were pretty shady back then but fifty years from now they'll be talking about how crooked boxing was back in 2006.

Joey Maxim once asked " What was I fighting in the Air Conditioning", I always loved that quote. I see Moore stopping Ray, but Ezzard Charles is the greatest Light Heavy weight ever.
