Knocking someone down and KOing them are two different things. I've rarely seen a fight when someone was KO'ed by a punch. I've seen guys go down and just quit but never laid out like in a boxing match where they just cannot get up.

Sure it happens but very few street fights end with a knockout. Most are just bloody and one guy freaks out and quits, or both get tired and just stop fighting.

Any punch that is good and hard enough to knock someone out has a big chance of shattering your fist if you're not wearing wraps and gloves.

I've put guys to semi-sleep on the street, when my middle knuckle has connected with the temple I haven't even had to hit with any real velocity to drop some meat and roll some eyes.

I've never been down but I had my bell rung in sparring by some 6'2" cruiserweight who was from another gym and just went at me to take my head off from the begining. I went out and touched gloves expecting a standard sparring match and this nut smashed me with a vicious combination, gave me a fat lip with one of the first punches he landed and had me seeing stars. He was taller, more experienced, and had the element of surprise. He really gave me a beating and unfortunately I barely landed a punch on him. Too busy getting my ass kicked. My coach stopped it twice and I insisted I continue but really I only continued taking a beating each time he let it go on. To my credit, I was never close to going down though he hit me flush with every other punch he threw and I saw bright white flashes through my eyes with every big punch he'd hurt me with. When I took off my headgear my hair was standing straight up like I'd been electrocuted.

I got respect in my gym for standing up to that kind of punishment without backing down or retreating, but it was a dumb fight plan: coming forward into a taller more experienced man's range who also happened to have a good punch.
