He was good enough for Hearns, Leonard, Duran and Hagler to avoid him like the plague for years and years and years (he was #1 contender before both Hearns/Leonard and Hagler/Leonard, and Duran didn't even consider the likes of Graham, Kalule or McCallum as opponents). When Bomber finally got his world title chances, his reflexes had gone.
The first time he split with Ingle was after the Kalule fight (but kissed and made up with him after the Kalambay fight), and Eastwood tried changing Bomber into more of an attacking fighter but it backfired in what was supposed to be his 'warm-up' fight (against Kalambay) before challenging for the world title (Hagler vacated the WBA belt when Bomber was mandatory and Bomber had already signed to fight Iran Barkley for the vacant title - before the Kalambay disaster). There were clear signs of his reflexes declining in the Kalule fight, but he still won every minute of every round against the guy Leonard described as his most difficult ever opponent.
