KESSLER & BEYER OVERSHADOW CALZAGHE’S HBO DEBUT!

FANS MISSING BEST FIGHT OF WEEKEND?
Alexandria, VA-At least we’ll allegedly see the tape delayed highlights of the excellent belt unification bout between Denmark’s WBA 168 lb. titlist Mikkel Kessler (37-0, 28 KOs) and WBC German counterpart Markus Beyer (34-2-1, 13 KOs). I’ve written repeatedly about how disgusted I am by HBO not showing this fight in full. Considering that neither has ever been seen in the United States, HBO should probably be thanked for the highlight nugget on a night when Welshman Joe Calzaghe (41-0, 31 KOs) will be defending the real World title of the division against a man who held Beyer to a technical draw (stopped in four on a cut) in May of this year, Cameroon’s Sakio Bika (20-1-2, 13 KOs).
HBO LOOKS TOWARDS SUPER MIDDLE SUPERFIGHT!
They could have stuck with just showing Joe and most of the audience wouldn’t have known the difference. To the betterment of boxing, they seemingly recognized the facts: Kessler is Calzaghe’s number one contender and Beyer is number two. Should Kessler win, HBO would have bidding rights at a battle between undefeated en****** that wouldn’t have to play on pay-per-view and this is at least a marginal step towards generating some interest outside of Europe for such an encounter. This Saturday is the test for the young budding superstar in Kessler. His buzz among the hardcore boxing fans has been great in the last year.
