I got to agree with Salvo here. Young Mexican fighters that don't have the benefit of Olympic glory often fight a lot when they are young and they are real fights. Surely not against top level competition but who starts out fighting champs. Look at Julio Garcia who is still very young and already has over 40 bouts.

We'll count his fights below 147 when he wins a belt in those divisions. Going back to fights when he was 12 years old is pretty damn desperate. lol
exactly that is desperate..Margarito cannot be the best welterweight especially when he has not beaten a top 5 welterweight

Factor in that Baldomir was getting handled by Clottey (who Margarito is fighting) before a suspect DQ and I still will give the edge to Margarito. People continually claim that he is only big and strong at 147 and somehow this discounts him as a good fighter. To me you use what advantages you have...for Margarito it is his size at 147. Nobody is dis*****g who the more versatile fighter is overall between Mayweather and Margarito...its Mayweather. On the other hand it is much more of a question as to who is the best AT WW.
Clottey vs baldomir was back in 1999 that's 7 years ago lol. Baldo is a better fighter now then he was back in 99. Who did clottey beat to deserve a shot at margarito title huh? by beating a bum taxi driver? the same taxi driver that before fighting clottey was facing a fighter with only 9 wins??????? lol.

This argument had nothing to do with whether Clottey was a fair opponent for Margarito (he really isn't). But hey I don't make the matches. The discussion was about who is the better WW, Margarito or Baldomir. My point was simply that Clottey was dominating him and we will get some sort of a measuring stick after Margarito fights Clottey...not that it will be the end all be all decision. Furthermore, we were talking about who has fought the tougher competition and I was just bringing up that they now will have faced a common opponent.

It says a lot about Margarito when a guy who has beaten absolutely no one is supposed to give Margarito a very tough challenge. Clottey has fought no one of note since Baldomir 7 years ago and he looked like absolute **** in his last fight on HBO...

Matchmaking is a game that 2 have to play at. Now I acknowledge that RIGHT NOW Margarito denied a worthy challenger in Williams (although somewhat unproven). But guess what...that does not mean the match will never happen, in fact it will happen soon after both have been on TV (sounds like a good thing to me). Outside of that, I have never seen Margarito turn down a challenge but I have seen others turn him down. I am not saying he is the most feared man on the planet, but AT 147 several top fighters have chosen not to fight him. Not his fault. If he gets his opportunity to fight a world class fighter he will either 1) win and be legitimized as a real WW contender/champ or 2) will lose and not get any more title shots. I don't see the problem.
