What's up with Teddy Atlas ?

I remember hearing him a while back saying he wasn't going to train anybody anymore because he was tired of the commitment, only to see a fighter not listen, something like that...then I thought I heard recently, he was going to train some guy from the Cruiserweight division that is coming back...so what is going on, is he training somebody, is he not?

Also, what are your thoughts on his knowledge of boxing history, competence as a trainer, and how does he compare against other trainers like Roach, Goosen, Steward, etc. ? obviously he can't suck if D'amato trusted him to train his fighters, Moorer loves the guy, Briggs praises him, but what are your thoughts anyway?

What about compared to Kevin Rooney overall, or at least how would Tyson have been different if Tyson listened to Atlas, different, no different?

For my opinion, just to start it off, Teddy seems very knowledgeable, much more than anybody that is shown on television, especially the "Historian" Bert Sugar...as a trainer, he seems to try to get a bit more attention than he should want, seems a bit arrogant, and doesn't have the resume that Steward has, but that isn't as important as some may think...when he talks about weaknesses of fighters he isn't afraid to tell it like it is, though I am not sure he is always correct...

For training fighters: Cus D'amato did put him in charge as his head trainer for his fighters, including his phenom Mike Tyson, until he was removed for the gun incident...he did help build the "foundation" of Tyson...he trained Michael Moorer to the Heavyweight title, though Emanuel should get some credit in this since he helped Moorer before Atlas...both Michael Moorer and Shannon Briggs seem to love the guy and swear by him...he didn't do so well with Michael Grant, but I don't think that was his fault, Grant didn't have a Heavyweight chin and had confidence problems that seemed unfixable.

His prefight analysis on ESPN are usually good.

he's not a very good pro trainer.

the most success he's had is when he was given all this credit for his speeches when moorer won the title, but i think it had more 2 do with moorer outjabbing holyfield, holyfield having an off-day, and a scoring error.

      what else has atlas done?

my take on it is that teddy is hard nosed to say the least. havent read his book. have read different versions of the story where he threatens a young tyson with or without a gun when mike verbaly assualted some young girl sexually that teddy personally knew.i know things went south for him with tyson camp after that and he left.

heard teddy explain on fnf that he was discussted with moorer not listening to him,and moorer was standing right next to him ,and agreed. then the next fight moorer had ,its like he didn't show up.teddy dropped him. so teddy stuck to broadcasting. he's done plenty of things for kids and i think he's coached in the olympics.

his personality may not be conduint for boxers to want to put up with.

Teddy Atlas is a good trainer, but he gives up on fighters. He tries to break them down then, build them up, it doesn't always work for the good but i've noticed thats his technique.

He's an excellent commentator, but I don't know if that translates into being a good trainer. If he was that great a trainer, he'd still be training fighters. I love his commentary and I think he really knows his stuff, but as far as training fighters goes, I'd probly pick Emmanuel Steward or Joe Goosen, but only if he ditched those really tacky shirts he wears.. lol.
