            here is the short statement:

WBO Lightweight Champion Acelino "Popó" Freitas surprised everyone here in Brazil today when he announced that he doesn't plan to keep fighting. The Brazilian, who compiled a record of 38-1, 32 KOs, has been one of the world's top fighters since the beginning of his career, in 1995. He defeated, among others, Anatoly Alexandrov, Joel Casamayor, Arthur Grigorian. In his only setback, Popo lost to Diego Corrales by TKO. He declared today that he had always planned to retire when he turned 30 (he is 31 now) and that he plans to stay in boxing as a promoter and with his social projects in Brazil. More details to follow.

wow... that IS a shocker. he had so much goin for him... and i was JUST starting to get into him and stuff.

overall, not a big dissapointment to me, but it would have been nice if he fought once or twice more.

Its certainly not uncommon for fighters to retire when they pass 30, but when u have only one loss AND that loss is un-avenged?

Good, best thing he could have done.

I think people are forgetting he didnt deserve the win against Raheem.

and who was waiting for him down the line, that represented a winnable fight?

hes wasnt going to beat corrales and a Young Juan Diaz was going to walk thru him.

                    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

This sucks for real. I thought he was going to fight Julio Diaz but now out of nowhere he retires. I heard this earlier and hoped it wasnt true but it does seem true now. Freitas is one of the best Brazilian fighters ever and is a icon in his native Brazil. Although im only part Brazilian, watching him fight made me proud to be Brazilian. I say thanks for the great career and wish him the best of luck with whatever he does next. I know he wants to promote, so lets hope he finds some nice talent in Brazil and South America.
