Former two-time middleweight champion Felix Sturm is set for his first fight since losing his WBA world title on the November 18 Universum Champions Night at the Burg-Wächter Castello in Düsseldorf, Germany. Sturm (25-2, 11 KOs) will face Australian Gavin Topp (20-2-2, 4 KOs) on a card that also features the big WBA heavyweight eliminator between unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev (21-0-1, 17 KOs) and ex-champ John Ruiz (41-6-1, 28 KOs). "I must show myself that I am there again," said Sturm at a press conference today. "On November 18, it will become apparent whether I'm the champion I want to be."

"That naturally is out goal," added trainer Michael Timm. "It won't be a walk in the park, but we will have laid the conditioning groundwork in the 7,800-foot high training camp in the Polish Zakopane (Mountains). Luckily the information of the fight delay (of the fight between Chagaev-Ruiz) came on time, so that we have moved back the sparring."

For the last five weeks, the 27-year-old Universum fighter has been training in Leverkusen and Cologne and Sturm said everything is going very well. He will now continue his training with Michael Timm in Hamburg from the end of next week. "Topp is a good opponent," added Timm. "For Felix it's important to get his feel of the ring again and to prove his new conditoning. He is very strong-willed and always wants to be the winner."
Also on the card will be WBA middleweight world champion Javier Castillejo (61-6, 41 KOs) in his first defense against Argentinian Mariano Natalio Carrera (29-4, 20 KOs). This will give the fight fans on hand an opportunity to make an immediate comparison of the strengths of both world class middleweights, Sturm and Castillejo.
As previously announced, Chagaev faces Ruiz in a pivotal heavyweight bout with world title ramifications. "It's great that I have the chance to box Ruiz," said Chagaev. "He has had 49 fights against good opponents and has a lot of experience." The postponement of the fight from October to November has caused no problems for Chagaev and his trainer Timm. "The foundation is already laid,", says Chagaev, who is expecting to go quickly into a title challenge against Russian WBA heavyweight world champion Nikolai Valuev from rival Sauerland boxing stable.
