Valero may be able to fight in the US next year!

Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda and LA-based trainer Joe Hernandez say they are going to take the path that had been successfuly taken by heavyweight Joe Mesi to get Edwin Valero chances to fight in the US. The duo have been behind Valero since the Venezuelan fighter was banned from fighting in the US due to a failed MRI brain scan in New York.

Hernandez says, they will allow Valero's California license to expire at the end of this year, thus, technically and effectively ending Valero's New York state suspension, which, under the "Ali Act", had become the cause of the US-wide suspension. They will then apply for licenses on a state-by-state basis, selecting states that they believe can be sympathetic to Valero's cause. Like Mesi.

Valero stopped his first 18 opponents in the first round, wresting the record long-held by Young Otto (15 consecutive, set in 1905). He won the WBA SuperFeatherweight title a few months ago from Vicente Mosquera with a 10th round stoppage (Mosquera's corner had seen enough).

Don Stewart writes about Valero in The Ring Double, January 2007, to be on newstands later this month, pal.

Hopefully it does happen. It couldn't get any better than Valero getting a license to fight in the U.S. He could be in the major mix at 130 and that will make the 130 weightclass even more exciting.

Thanks for the link buddy. As psychopath said, edwin is a force to reckon with at 130. Many peeps may say he's one-dinmensional but his fight against mosqueda says otherwise. He was able to adjust properly when he noticed that his opponent won't just go down in 1 or 2 rounds. He will give a lot of 130's a style problem including the pacman. Can't wait to see this potential blockbuster to happen.

Doug Fischer of MaxBoxing has been raving about Valero for years now. He claims that Valero is capable of a lot more than he has shown of late, adding that he has seen Valero spar in LA prior to the NY suspension and that Valero showed a lot more prowess than just a big punch. Much more.

Before Pacquiao KD'd Morales, it was Valero whom a number of boxing-savvy folks thought would first bring Erik to his knees. Even then, they had such high expectations.

That Don Stewart article I gave you a link to also says that there have been reports that Valero gave Lascano a lot of trouble in sparring sessions back when he was in LA.

Another interesting thing said by that article is that Valero shall be joining Golden Boy Promotions if and when he gets his US state licenses. His doing so is seen as the proper thing to do as prior to his suspension he was already somewhat of a Golden Boy ward-- Oscar's father was his co-manager alongside Hernandez.

Like Psychopath and you say, the 130-lbs. class is getting more and more interesting, indeed.
