Mayweather stated in an interview that he was only paying the WBC's..
sanctioning fee for the fight with Baldi. He stated that the belts were meaningless. If thats the case why even pay the fee for the WBC?

Baldy has the IBO and IBA titles as well as the WBC. The WBC is the only one considered one of the main 4 sanctioning bodies. The IBO and IBA titles are meaningless compared to the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO. There is a good possibility that he vacates the titles soon anyways, so why pay the fees for two that don't really matter? He is probably only paying the WBC fees to be recognized as a champ at 147. -
Maybe he's thinking of the future: when people look into his resume' it shall look better.
Baldomir, though "lineal" champion, is not exactly at this stage a shove-in HOF; who knows if he'll ever be. Decades from now, when fans look at PBF's record, they'll give the Baldomir meeting narry a pause if it is not made a fight for the "linear" title, the WBC crown.
Anyone who has tried going through the records of fighters of years past may have experienced this: glancing at fights that have the qualifying phrase, "for the World title recognized only in...", was, often, enough to spur one to just move on, even though the protagonists may be HOF's. The page turning becomes even quicker if one of the two fighters involved is not in the HOF.
If (most will say, "when", or "as soon as") Mayweather wins, he will become the "lineal" champ and his record shall show it. Both the IBA and the IBO cannot lend much more luster to that. So, why pay for their sanctioning fees?Last edited by grayfist; 10-03-2006, 06:20 AM.Comment
