Jones wasn't all that great in the amateurs, until the Olympics when he turned it on against poor opposition and the Korean who had got four gifts to the final.. actually, Richie Woodhall gave Jones a close fight in the semi's.
Jones lost to Liles cleanly earlier on in '88, Liles actually knocked him down. He also lost cleanly to Gerald McClellan in '88, McClellan had him pinned against the ropes for most of the fight. In '87, he lost cleanly to Germany's Andy Liebing. And yes, at the Olympic Trials I thought Liles edged it. Antonio Tarver was robbed against Jones in the Sunshine State Games final in '82.
Credit where it's due though, he really looked good in '92 when his daddy let him off his leesh and back on TV (his daddy cancelled the NBC contract in '89, inspired by seeing Benn having too much too soon (embarassing loss to Watson)).. like a kid posessed, frustrated that his daddy had held him back for so long. He really laid into his opponents, he was awesome in '92 and '95, and I suppose '94. He improved, almost as if he was chemically assisted or something. -

GEOFF, You are one of the most ridiculous posters in the history of cyberspace and your info is based on either lies or ******ity and certainly on huge BIAS..... I was there for Jones vs Liles and McClellan and noneof us were there for Jones-Tarver as 13 year olds......... Jones wasn't a top of the line amateur until the olympics in 88?? LOL You have NO idea what you are talking.Comment
