"It’s going to be old school, classic Chico!"-Diego Corrales

"It’s going to be old school, classic Chico!"

FightFan.com caught up with Diego “Chico” Corrales just a little over a week away from his rubber match with nemesis Joel Casamayor. "Chico" pulls no punches answering our questions and puts us on notice that he’s ready to make a statement Oct. 7th. Only on FightFan.com!

    September 30, 2006

FF: Diego how is training going?

DC: Good man, training is going very well. Very well.

FF: Do you feel strong and ready and like you’ll be peaking at the right time going into this fight?

DC: Yes I do. My weight has been very good.

FF: Those two fights you had with Castillo were very physically grueling. Is there any concern two exciting wars like that could have taken something out of you?

DC: No I’m no concerned at all. I’ve had a year off so there’s really no reason to worry about anything. They were two grueling fights but I’ve had the time to rest and I feel sharp and ready.

FF: You’re a huge puncher who excites the fans by going toe to toe. Doing that against Casamayor has proved a riskier plan and you had more success in the 2nd fight when you boxed and used your reach. Will you look to do the same in this 3rd fight, or will we see some brawling?

DC: You’ll probably see a mix of both. If there’s the opportunity for me to slug it out and gun him down I will do that. There’s no if ands or buts about it. I’m not wasting my time if I don’t have to. If I can get him out of there early I’ll do that. If not I’ll do what I do and play it smart.

FF: It’s no secret you and Joel don’t like each other very much, but you’re also a very professional fighter. How does a personal dislike play into a fight like this? Does it effect your mind set or the way you approach the fight?

DC: Not at all. For me no. I do what I have to do. For him, maybe so. I’m going to sit back and keep my mind together and box smart. I don’t think that personal feelings should ever effect business.

FF: Casamayor is a slippery fighter and has a lot of power in his counter punches. Is this fight more about what he might bring to the table, or is it more about you and how you can control fight with what you decide to do?

DC: A little bit of both. I think his counter punching is going to play into my hands and very much so into what I do and how I do it. We’ve worked on our training camp to be able to deal specifically with this.

FF: You are one and one against Casamayor. How important to you is it to make a statement in this fight and assert yourself as the better fighter of the two?

DC: This is very important to me. Very very important. It’s not about being one and one against him, it’s about these next few years and seeing me go out on top. I want to make a great stand and I want everyone to see me as a great champion. I want to finish this fight off and move on to bigger and better things.

FF: Is there anything you have taken away from the first two fights that has you confident you’ll be the clear winner in this 3rd fight?

DC: Absolutely. I don’t want to give those things away yet, but absolutely. I will defiantly show it on Oct. 7th.

FF: I don’t want to ask you to look past this fight in any way, but will we see you at 135 for much longer after this fight?

DC: That’s really a question for Gary Shaw. If it makes sense I’ll do it, and if not I’ll move forward.

FF: Talk to all the "Chico" Corrales fans and tell them what they’re going to see on Oct. 7th.

DC: It’s been a long year waiting but you’re going to see the explosive vicious Chico coming back. It’s going to be old school classic Chico!

FF: Diego you are a classy guy and we wish you the best of luck Oct. 7th.

    DC: Thanks bro!"

I'll be rooting for Corrales, even though I don't really watch him.

I'm starting to get pretty excited about this fight.

I was hoping to see Corrales move up and wasn't overly excited when this fight was announced but it's starting to sound like it will be a grudge war.
