In a telephone interview, Jeff Mayweather related to me that he has left the Shannon Briggs camp. Briggs, who is preparing for his WBO Heavyweight title shot on Nov. 4, has left his Colorado Springs training camp to train with Chuck McGregor in Phoenix. McGregor is based in Phoenix, which is where Briggs' title fight is going to take place. Among McGregor's notable former clients are Hasim Rahman.
Ironically, but perhaps not coincidentally, McGregor has also worked with Sergei Lyakhovich.
"I just felt I was being phased out", stated Mayweather. "He never said one thing to me in regards to whether he wanted me to still train him or not. I took it upon myself to be the man because I know when I'm getting phased out. I just wanted to go home."
Mayweather went on to explain the situation further. "There was just so much chaos and confusion going on from one day to the next, you didn't know what was happening."
"Some days, we would wake up and run as a team, some days we'd run with select people, then some days we wouldn't run at all."
"It was too much for me because we're playing musical trainers. I'll work one day, Chuck works one day."
Mayweather remains graceful, commendable given the circumstances. "I don't think he's a bad coach or anything, I don't have anything against him or Shannon. I was brought down here to do a job, and if I'm not going to be able to do my job then I don't need to be here."
"It's a business decision to me because I have nothing against Shannon and I'm thankful to have the opportunity", explains Mayweather. "At the same time, I'm not going to cry over spilled milk. I wish Shannon the best."
When asked whether he'd be willing to train Shannon again, Mayweather said that he would, but only on his terms.
"I wouldn't say that I would never work with him. I would work with him but it would have to be only on terms of me being the head trainer, which I know that will never happen."
"I know that I'm gonna land on my feet no matter what. I'm like a cat!", explained the never disheartened "Jazzy Jeff".
Mayweather is the current trainer of Ray Austin, JD Chapman, and Contender runner-up Steve Forbes.
Mayweather is currently in Florida, but will be heading back to Las Vegas shortly.
