The October 28 WBA heavyweight title eliminator between unbeaten Ruslan Chagaev (21-0-1, 17 KOs) and former WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz was officially announced on Wednesday at a press conference at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart. Chagaev stated, "It is great that I have a chance to fight against Ruiz. He is well experienced with 49 fights but I will win!" Ruiz was not present.

The purse bid for this elimination fight was won by Universum Box-Promotion and will be the highlight of the evening. If Chagaev is victorious, there shouldn't be any obstacles in order to be announced the official challenger and to face the current WBA world champion Nicolay Valuev of the Sauerland boxing stable. "It is my dream to beat Valuev and take home a world championship belt," Chagaev commented.

His very successful coach Michael Timm is supporting him and giving him the best preparation for this fight. "Ruslan is a puncher," said Timm. "Although Ruiz was the champion last year, Ruslan is top fit. Sparks will fly!"

The Universum Champions Night event is being billed as "Heavyweight Explosion." Also on hand at the press conference were heavyweights Alexander Dimitrenko and Sebastian Köber, plus cruiserweight Firat Arslan.

WBO Intercontinental Champion Alexander Dimitrenko (22-0, 13 KO) will defend his title for the 3rd time and return to his second home: "I really like it here. My girlfriend is from Stuttgart so I have a reason to come here." The 6'7 giant out of the Universum boxing stable will face the Argentinean Gonzalo Omar Basile, also 6'6 tall, who has got a noticing fight record: 26 fights, 25 wins with 12 KO! But Dimitrenko seems to be unimpressed by his contender: "He is tall and a typical South American boxer."

His coach Fritz Sdunek: "Alexander has undertaken a good development but he still needs time. At the end of next year he should be close for a title shot. Than he can be the new Klitschko."

Alongside the heavyweights, there is an interesting the challenge at cruiserweight. Spotlight fighter Grigory Drozd meets Firat Arslan from Rottweil, who awaits another fight near his hometown. Both boxers are listed in the top 10 of the different rankings and will have a great battle. Eventually the winner will have a good chance for a world title fight. Firat Arslan mentioned in an aggressive manner: "I didn't come the long way to be beaten by this guy!" What an intro!

The pro debut of spotlight heavyweight Sebastian Köber was in Stuttgart in April 2006, at that time in the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer Halle. The 27-year-old just impressed with his qualities in Cuxhaven when he knocked out the Russian Eduard Churakov."I am really happy about my 5th win and I have learned a lot since turning pro" Köber says relating to his fight in Cuxhaven yesterday.

Also World Champion coach Fritz Sdunek has a lot of positives things to say about the new and promising boxers: "As you have seen yesterday in Cuxhaven, we have a lot of young talented boxers lining up – including Alekseev, Boytsov, Zbik, Tajbert and Gevor – who can be a World Champion one day."

Chagaev looks strong, quick and explosive with his punches. But Ruiz? I would not have picked such an awkward fighter to face in what would be your breakout fight. Ruiz is an out and out spoiler, and unless an exceptional performance from Chagaev sparks Ruiz out, he's not going to look good.
