Jorge "Travieso" Arce, is ready for the next stage of his career.
"I believe this is my time to take off and be a star," said Arce, the WBC Flyweight champion. "A lot of people know me, but have never seen me really fight. That's why I'm so excited about headlining a big show in the United States that is going to be shown on HBO".
On Saturday (Sept 23) Arce, 44-3-1-(34) of Los Mochis, Mexico will take on Masibulele Makepula,28-3. 18 KOs) of East London, South Africa in a WBC Super Flyweight elimination bout at the Dodge Arena in Hidalgo, Texas.
"I'm also very please to have this big opportunity in Hidalgo. Its a great boxing town and people are going to come out and support the show and I'm sure that it will be a great night at the fights for all of us", said Arce, 27, during a stop in Hidalgo last month.
Arce has won 24 consecutive fights since losing to hall of famer Michael Carbajal in July of 1999 in Tijuana, Mexico.
"I was just a baby back then and he was a great champion. I might have lost the fight with one punch, but I sure gave him a beating for 10 rounds. Great fight and even greater learning experience," said Arce about his fight with Carbajal.
All three of Arce's defeats have been against former or current world champions, Carbajal, Victor Burgos and Omar Nino (New 108 pound WBC king).
Over the last three years Arce has also been a very big star in Mexican television finishing third in the reality show "Big Brother VIP" and then taking part in "Bailando por un Sueño" (Dancing for a Dream).
"I believe that I'm the most well known boxer in Mexico, but more for other things then my boxing. Now is time to show them that I'm a big time boxer," said Arce.
"I'm like a wedding cake. They (cakes) always look nice, but you never know how good they will taste. Well people think I'm cute and funny, but now is time to give them a real good taste of my boxing skills," said Arce.
With the two biggest names in Mexican boxing, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera entering the twilight of their great careers, it seems that this would be a good time to find a new hero.
"Morales and Barrera are still great, but they are on their way out and is time for a new Mexican star in boxing, why can't it be me," insisted Arce.
This is a great read
I think Arce could be huge
