    Exclusive Interview: Sergei Lyakhovich
    By Ryan ********
    9-18-06

Reigning WBO Heavyweight Champion Sergei "The White Wolf" is currently preparing for his first title defense against the always dangerous Shannon Briggs. The Belarussian heavyweight won the title in earlier this year when he upset Lamon Brewster in a fiersome fire fight. Lyakhovich, 23-1 (14 KO), spoke with Boxingscene.com at a press conference to announce his upcoming bout in Manhattan's Gallagher's Steakhouse.

********: How is training going for this fight?

    Lyakhovich: "Great."

********: It is said that fighter's become better once they get a title belt around their waist. Do you think you've improved since beating Lamon Brewster?

    Lyakhovich: "Absolutely."

********: How taxing and damaging a fight was the Brewster fight?

Lyahovich: "Everybody watched this fight, it was a brutal fight."

********: Why are the Eastern Europeans dominating the heavyweight division now?

Lyakhovich: "Before they didn't have fighters from Eastern Europe. So they didn't know about us. Right now, it's hard work."

********: Who will you be sparring with to prepare for this fight?

Lyakhovich: "I don't know these guys names yet."

********: One thing that the division has been lacking in is guys who fight with heart and courage. In light of your brave performance against Brewster, many felt that you could be the guy to step forward as the best fighter in the division. Do you think you are the man in the heavyweight division?

Lyakhovich: "I don't like to talk about myself. I leave the boxing analytics and media to talk about it."

********: You were initially slated to face Wladimir Klitschko at the Garden, but that fight fell through. Do you know why?

Lyakhovich: "I don't know. I told everybody, I told his people I wanted to fight him. I don't know what's going on."

********: What do you think of Shannon Briggs as a fighter?

Lyakhovich: "He's a good fighter. Strong, good fighter with good right hand and pretty good handspeed."

********: What are your thoughts on Klitschko-Brock?

    Lyakhovich: "I'm picking Klitschko."

********: What do you plan on doing differently against Briggs than Brewster?

Lyakhovich: "He's a totally different boxer, totally different strategy."

********: Is there anything you would like to say to the fans in closing?

Lyakhovich: "November 4, everybody will see a much better Sergei Lyakhovich. A much better boxer, a more powerful guy. They will see a new guy."

Interesting, is he normally so short on words or was he just trying to rush through this thing? Seems like a cool guy, more confirmation that those letters to Wlad were written by someone else.

Ryan, I got a question. How the **** do you conduct these interviews? Both of you just standing and talking to each other or what?

What really happened is that homey barely speaks english. I had to rephrase alot of questions cuz he barely speaks english. He was very engaging, just didn't have alot of things to say cuz hes humble/adjusting to english.

Smokin, yeah I approach all boxers, greet them, ask to talk, then we get down to the business of getting down. Alot of fun.
