    Exclusive Interview: Juan Diaz

    Exclusive Interview: Juan Diaz
    By Ryan ********
    9-18-06

I recently met up with Juan Diaz at a press conference in Manhattan to announce his addition to the November 4 Showtime date in a co-featured bout on the undercard of the Sergei Lyakhovich-Shannon Briggs WBO Heavyweight title fight. Diaz, 30-0 (15 KO), also revealed his new deal with Don King Promotions. Diaz, who turns 23 next week, will be facing the formidable TBA.

********: Do you know who your next opponent is?

Diaz: "I don't know my next opponent, but I know it's going to be November 4 on Showtime."

********: Are you still in school, and what is your major?

Diaz: "Yeah, I'm still at the University of Houston downtown and my major is Government."

********: Do you live on campus or do you still live with your parents?

Diaz: "No no, I still live with my parents."

********: Pacquiao recently said that he thought he could beat you. What do you think of the Pacman as a fighter and would you like to fight him?

Diaz: "Definitely, I think he's a great champion, a great fighter. He puts alot of pressure, he fights with alot of intensity. If he wants to fight me, I'll tell him bring it on. Come up to the lightweight division and I'll give him a chance."

********: What about a showdown with Jesus Chavez. Would you be interested in that?

Diaz: "Definitely, it interests me. I want to fight the best to prove that I'm the best. Whatever fight comes up, well...."

********: What are your thoughts on Barrera-Juarez, and can Juarez rebound from that loss?

Diaz: "It's going to be hard. He looked a little bad and he didn't do what he said he was going to do. It's going to be tough for him to bounce back."

********: How will your new deal with Don King affect your career?

Diaz: "I think it's a new chapter in my career and my life. I think it's going to make it better. I think it's going to make me alot better, more publicity. He's one of the best promoters out there. All it can do is make me better."

********: There were talks that you were supposed to face Lakva Sim for a second time. Why hasn't that fight come off, and is that still in your plans?

Diaz: "Laka Sim is not in the plans anymore because he had visa plans at first, and he didn't get ready for the fight. Plus, I think he retired."

********: Are you in training camp right now?

Diaz: "I'm doing a little training. Swimming, running, and lifting weights.

********: Do you have anything you would like to say to the fans in closing?

Diaz: I want to thank them for all their support and everything they've gave me.

    Good interview.

Im surprised he wasn't more positive about his comment about Rocky, i'd thought he'd play it off and say something more inspirational to his former team-mate. Shows that this guy doesn't pull punchs and speaks his mind. You never know Rocky in the furture may go the lightweight division and he may end up fighting Diaz too.

Glad to see he is willing to fight anybody, i think with King he will be able to make these fights.

Thanks. Juan is a very humble, just all around nice guy. His managers were trying to rush him out of the joint but he stayed and talked with the fans and signed every autograph. Hell, I think I left before him.

I think Diaz dominates Juarez, Juarez's feet are way too slow for Diaz. Diaz is willing to fight anybody, I believe that.

Diaz would kill Juarez. Should fight Pman or move up to 140 and fight Hatton, now those are the fights I wanna see!

Don King has another champion now and knowing Don King's past he will try his best to keep that title with his company. Which basically means that if a fighter wants to fight Diaz then they have to either be with DKP or sign a contract with DKP.

How do you think Spinks got a crack at Karmazin at 154? They are both DKP fighters. King will only make a big fight if both fighters are part of his company.

I still say that this is a bad decision by Diaz and his team. Don King fighters haven't been on the big stage lately.

I bet you asiansen- can ask Diaz how the sparring went when he sparred Rocky, which im assuming they have sparred. Diaz talked about Rocky as if he expects to fight him one day or they have a grudge towards each other, at least thats my interpertation of what he said/or how he experessed his opinion of Rocky.
