I have never been convinced with area blackouts, but if promoters insist on it, they can have it. Networks can afford it--they have with other sports.

The stars will love the much greater exposure. They can make more money with the bigger image!

It's going to be increasingly PPV related. It's the only way to make big bucks anymore. The sport has been ruined enough that the crowds don't gather for matches anymore. Too much corruption and garbage belts available...too much ducking and decisions that are simply wrong.

To use another metaphore, Free TV can be the vitamins. It is not the magic potion.

It’s kind of a chicken and egg thing with the PPVs. The sports that are on free TV are already popular and get huge licensing fees. I guess that reflects that boxing’s audience is more hardcore fans; the general population has had a declining interest in boxing for a while. Honestly I expect since the 60s at least (well before it stopped being showed on free TV) interest has been declining.

What boxing needs, but will never get is central organization that can market it, promote it, and increase its visibility and credibility.
