I dont know that he could. Ali, Clay, whatever you want to call him had problems with fighters who had that good jab stiff jab like Ken Norton and as good a fighter as Kenny Norton was Liston at his best was that much better.
Liston was on another level to the the rest of the fighters around in the late 50's and early 60's and after Clay became champion alot of the guy's he fought had already lost to Liston.
If Liston would have stayed on of his game and beat Clay who then would ever wrest the championship from him? It wouldn't be until the very late 60's and early 70's that anybody would have a chance against a then aged Sonny Liston.
