  • Mesi Struggles With Journeyman

Undefeated heavyweight contender Joe Mesi (33-0, 26 KOs) is still showing signs of rust and struggling with fighters that two-years ago would have been eaten up in a single round. Since his return to the sport in April, Mesi has appeared less than spectacular. Four fights are in the books since April and Mesi does not appear to be gaining the necessary progress to boost himself back to the same level as the Mesi of 2004. [details]

I worked cuts for Jason last night...he did a hell of a job against Mesi...great jabs but didnt follow up because he ran out of gas...Me and Rockin worked his corner and Rockin who is a way better writer than I is going to write a story about our night against Baby Joe Mesi....so I will step aside on this one and let Rockin give you all a first hand report from "The Corner"....personally, as a fight fan, and that is exactly what I am...and can stop bleeding...but first and foremost...a fan....it was my first pro fight and probably ranks up there as one of the greatest nights of my life...I live in lower Michigan and the fight was close to the Upper Peninsula...didnt get home till 4:30 AM and now Im back to work today at the day job..one other note to all you Rockin fans...IT WAS HIS SOUND BOXING ADVISE THAT KEPT JASON IN THIS FIGHT....Rockin is a great trainer and I hope he and his associate can help Jason go far in out sport...keep an eye out for JASON WEISS...I dont think he is going to lose much more...we're gunna take care of him and you will see him and speak of him again...and he is a hell of a guy...paid me double!!!!!! and was very gracious in defeat...and so was Baby Joe...he came over to our dressing room and acted with humbleness and I was very impressed by his graciousness...I hope he can step this up and take it all the way....TALK TO ME!

Do me(the sport) a favor and spread that love of boxing onto a friends and family-all it takes is one live prze fight for a casual sports fan and they are 9 times out of 10 hooked on the sport, you appear to be proof of this!

As for Baby Joe, at this rate his comeback looks like a nightmare, he should have at this point in the comeback started to show some signs of that devasatating power that when he was at his best made him somewhat dangerous...it just sounds like he is on a sure fire track to pain.

Did you see anything in Joe last night that would suggest otherwise?

Joe was never that great before he got injured in the Jirov fight. He was an OK heavy, but he could never compete with the likes of Toney, Peter, Wladimir, Valuev, and Byrd. He might be competitive against Oquendo, Ruiz, and Rahman, but Mesi was, at best, a C+/B- fighter. The heavyweight equivalent of Gatti. Tons of heart but not enough skill to compete at the top.

Let's face it, he beat Jirov in Jirov's first fight at heavyweight and got KD'd 3 times! He struggled with Monte Barrett BIG TIME and got what amounted to a home-town decision. This kid was just a cult idol in Buffalo and, after his injury, created more name recognition than he deserves.

On a side note, if Mesi is allowed to fight, why not let Edwin Valero fight?

When Joe Mesi first walked into the ring...to me....he was larger than life...I was scared for our guy Jason. It's different when your close enough to reach out and touch these guys, when their sweat hits you in the face from a punch....I was truely awestruck!!!! Mesi seemed dangerous the entire fight...I kept waiting for him to land that one punch that was going to end it. On Jason's behalf, he did good, he kept moving, tried to stay away from the power. Heck one time Joe landed a clean right hand and Jason yelled at him..."Thats all you got". Jason made Mesi's eye swell real nice, Jason has an Oak Tree jab, fella's, Im telling you, this kid can hit hard...when Joe came to our dressing room, shook hands with Jason, hugged him and said, and I quote..."You hit hard"...but that was the extent of it...you cant say Jason threw great punches all night, you cant say Jason is a well schooled well trained fighter. He is going to need time. Back to Mesi...they are bringing him back too slow in my opinion...and I am glad he is moving up to 6 rounders. I'm glad last night wasnt a 6 rounder or Jason would have been in trouble. Mesi still has skills but here's my bottom line opinion....for a guy who was pretty damn good...top 20 at one time...he certainly doesnt look like that guy today. I dont think he will ever be heavyweight champ again...but I did speak to his dad..I believe it was his dad...who states that in 18 months Joe Mesi will be heavyweight champion of the world...but what else do you expect him to say. Joe better really step it up if that is going to even be remotely possible...He fought a guy last night who started the night 3-1-2 and out of shape and JASON GAVE HIM A HARD TIME...if Jason had Rockin with him for a month or 2 befor this fight JOE MESI WOULD HAVE GONE TO SLEEP LAST NIGHT and it would have been the end of his career. I think deep down Joe knows it too...I think he thinks he dodged a bullet...and then again...not to many fighters CAN SEE and also BELIEVE the truth...reality...so again maybe Joe doesnt see that...my hats off to Jason Weiss...he did so well with so few skills...and I dont mean that as a put down at all....he just wasnt ready. And by the way...our guy has no money, no real formal pro training, did spend some time with KRONK as an amatuer, and Joe Mesi's only job is to train...you tell me what you think of that...

I don't think Mesi should be allowed to continue anymore. If people are seeing how he's not improving that greatly over these last couple of fights and is expected to eventually take on the top contenders, he's going to get serious hurt. There is a difference clearly between Valero and Mesi. Valero got banned though immediately went out of the states and continued fighting without losing anything. He took on a huge risk, though in the end, he's the man in charge regardless of how risky it was. Now Mesi took years off and he's so done it's not even funny. Someone has to step up and tell him this because he's clearly seeing only the $$$ and he's going to get killed chasing it.
