In certain quarters there have been inferences that something sinister must have occured because the master scoresheet has clearly been altered.
Of course the master scoresheet had been altered; the master scoresheet is not at issue here.
The system is that each judge hands his scoresheet to a referee after a round has been completed and the referee then passes all three scoresheets to the commission supervisor at ringside. The scores for each round are then entered onto the master scoresheet.
Unusally, the name of the challenger, Juarez, appeared on the left hand side of the master sheet.
Rebecca Alvarez, the California commission member whose duty it was to enter the scores for each round onto the master sheet, simply erred in the 12th. Seeing a "10" under Juarez's name on the judge's scoresheets for the 12th, Alvarez automatically entered a "9" under Barrera'a name, which is understandable as 10-10 rounds are hardly ever scored in California or indeed in any of the major American states. It was only after the decision had been announced that the error was noticed, and the master score sheet was merely amended to reflect the actual scores of Judges Ford and Morita for the last round.
There was nothing underhand about what happened, and this is not the first time that an error has been spotted after a verdict has been announced in a title bout.
