    Maskaev-Okhello on Dec 23

    Maskaev-Okhello on Dec 23?
    By Alexey Sukachev
Also no official announcement has been made, informed sources close to Russian promoter Vladimir Hryunov confirmed that WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev would make an optional defense versus Japan-based Ugandan Peter Okhello (WBC #12 and current OPBF beltholder) on December 23rd in Moscow at a still undisclosed venue. According to the "Ves' Sport" media agency, Maskaev was quoted as saying: "I'll take this challenge for the sake of Russia and the Russian people. That's not all about talking. I eagerly want Moscow to host the first ever world title bout in Russian boxing history. I don't want to say any trash about Peter Okhello; however I do think that more prestigious and well-off contenders wouldn't have traveled so far to fight in Russia. I haven't seen anything of Okhello yet but I shall sit down to review his tapes, possibly, by the end of the week. By this time the deal will have been signed." The show will be promoted by Vladimir Hryunov who has already worked with Oleg three years ago for the Julius Francis fight in Chekhov, Russia. Hot Russian prospect Alexander Povetkin will fight for his first career title. It's also possible that WBC mandatory Sam Peter could appear on the undercard vs TBA.Tuesday, September 12 2006

    -------------------------------------------------

I think this would mean that Oleg will commit to fight Peter next after the voluntary defense.

i agree... but why could not Wlad wait for one month and NOT stick with NOV 11? probably because of other cotractual arrangements ---- MSG and HBO.

at the age of 37, wouldn't you want to make as much money as possible before you retire.

ITS NOT WHAT THE FANS WANT. do you ever think about that. the dude has a family and has a life. its his JOB.

I bet this doesn't even get American TV. The heavyweight division does not need fights like this...

But hey, he got the belt, he can fight whoever he wants. This fight isn't good for retaining/gaining fans, though. No one knows who this opponent is.

IMO, Oleg understands that he does not have much in him and just wants to get as much cash as possible before he faces Klitschko or Peter. He knows he does not have much against these guys.

If Maskaev somehow loses to Okhello....its not likely, but possible, its boxing....

then will it be Samuel Peter vs Okhello for the WBC title?

yes, but Wlad was NOT offering to move the fight from the Nov 11 date to December -- and that's what Maskaev wanted
