Jaca to challenge Marquez for title
The Philippine Star 09/14/2006
Former OPBF super bantamweight champion Jimrex Jaca of RWS Stable girds up for the biggest fight of his career when he challenges defending champion Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico for the WBO featherweight title.
The 12-round fight is set Oct. 21 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.
Cebuano promoter Rex "Wakee" Salud, the manager of Jaca, the other day received the fight contract from Marquez camp and said the Filipino slugger is looking forward to the fight.
"Marquez is a very dangerous opponent, but we accepted the offer because this is an opportunity for Jaca to prove if he has what it takes to be a world champion. We have to gamble because this is a rare chance for Jaca," said Salud, who is also the consultant of Manny Pacquiao.
Marquez shot to fame when he recovered from three knockdowns in the first round to forge a 12-round draw with Pacquiao in their IBF/WBA unification bout on May 8, 2004 in Las Vegas.
If plans don’t miscarry, this will the first time Marquez will defend the crown he seized after pulling off a seventh round TKO win over Thai Terdsak Jandaeng last Aug. 5 at the Montbleu Resort and Spa in Stateline, Nevada.
Delighted upon hearing the good news, Jaca promised to double his efforts to dethrone Marquez.
Jaca holds a record of 27-2-1 with 12KOs, while Marquez has an impressive 45-3-1 card with 34KOs.
