Every interview I have ever seen James in he comes off very humble...the guy had great physical gifts, but mentally he just didn't seem to really want to be a boxer, at least looking from the outside perspective.
Maybe it was because he was just to humble a person and liked being and living an easy-going lifestyle.
Taking his story and trying to get an understanding of "why?" he fought the way he did, reminds me of those kids that want to participate in the sport that there father is/was in, but when they realize that it's just not for them and there are better ways to get close to your father; they take their focus on to something more their "style", for James it was basketball. When his baseketball career didn't fulfill, he looked towards boxing as something he knew he had the capabilities for, plus it was something to keep him close to his father. At one time he was just going through the motions and it cost him with losses...He could of just realized at some point that the fighters he was fighting were top guys giving their all, while he was just physicall there, but not mentally, and knowing this said "Hey, they barely beat me and I didn't even give my all."
Not wanting to just coast by anymore he finally decided to get his ass in gear, working out regulary with intensity, and putting together a number of wins leading up to Tyson...at this point, he was doing well, meeting his potential, and then his mother dies...when this type of devastation usually happens to the "common" person, they fluster, but not James, not this time, he loved his mother, his mother loved and believed in him, he was going to win for her. Going into the ring vs Tyson he wasn't going to at least give it everything he had, no more half-ass fights. He went in, kicked the **** out of Tyson, fulfilled his promise to his mother, father, by living up to his full potential, then decided he wanted his easy-going lifestyle/personality back, and decided to pack it in with a huge payday against Holyfield.
I think it may have been Tyson that said, "I would rather be a good person than a good fighter"
Dam I love boxing stories...maybe not 100% accurate, but as good as I can get at the moment...anybody have any other info that is more accurate, please send it over.
Anybody else think that Douglas and Bowe have similar traits?Last edited by Abe Attell; 09-05-2006, 03:40 AM.Comment
