Toney-Peter: The judges were completely wrong

James Toney risked his reward of facing Oleg Maskaev for the WBC Heavyweight Championship when he outboxed and outfought the biggest puncher in the heavyweight division for eight out of twelve rounds but lost a questionable split decision to the highly proclaimed Sam Peter. Peter managed to land a good share of bombs on Toney, but the shots came intermittently throughout the bout; meanwhile, Toney steadily picked Peter apart, bloodying the Nigerian’s nose with a jab that could not miss. Peter came closest to realizing his prediction of a fourth round knockout in round 5 when he nailed Toney with a picture perfect right hand to the temple, but Toney proved why his chin is one of the best in the sport as he took the shot well, using the ropes to hold himself up until he gathered his wits. The rest of the time, Toney nailed Peter flush with crisp counter punches and even stopped to turn his head to the crowd or toward Peter’s corner to show his bravado. Both behemoths lumbered their way down the stretch, their weight becoming more of a factor with each passing round, but both men impressed as their will to win kept them on their feet and throwing punches. With Toney consistently landing the better shots, a frustrated Peter reached his gloves back and clapped them together twice over Toney’s head in an attempt to bust his eardrums in round 9. The tactic cost Peter a point where he could not afford it. Coming into the twelfth round, Peter needed a knockout to win, but it was Toney’s trainer, Freddie Roach, who once again gave his fighter the order to put his man down as he has been known to do in bouts that appear close to the casual viewer. Two judges outrageously saw Peter winning nine of the rounds, which left Toney the loser by split decision in a bout he could not have lost. Toney expressed his disappointment in the sport and perhaps himself as he bowed his head in the corner, unable at first to voice his disapproval of the injustice, perhaps realizing had he come into the bout in better shape, he very well may have won every single round. Toney’s lament was transient as he responded to taunts from Peter’s trainer, Ivaylo Gotzev, by going after him, which prompted Gotzev and Peter to flee the ring like robbers from a bank. Only in boxing can a winner so clear-cut end up the loser, which is disheartening to all but his detractors, who are ever anxious to push Toney out of boxing for good. For now, Toney remains defiant that he will remain in the sport and become Heavyweight Champion, but he is older than ever and not getting any slimmer, and his chance might possibly have been ripped away by heartless judges.

I just wrote that in about 10 minutes. Sometimes I write afterthoughts to big fights, about a paragraph long. I have like 50 of them on my comp. I just felt like if I didn't write about this injustice it would be forgotten down the line. I save all this ****.
