I've voted for Sam Peter to win via KO/TKO, because although I know it is going to be a very hard task, it will only take a single punch to put James Toney on ***** street and considering Peter has 36 minutes to try and do so, I don't see Toney holding out through the whole fight without getting caught once. Sam Peter has the height/weight advantage, although James Toney is getting heavier & heavier as his career progresses into the twilight stages, I just think that will catch up to him sometime soon with devastating results.
Samuel Peter to win by KO/TKO with James Toney well ahead on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
This fight really is one of the more interesting fights in quite some time. The only recent match-ups to equal it are Lewis-Vitaly and Wlad-Peter. Both were close fights with lots of action and drama. Both could have been won by either fighter with momentum switching regularly.
I'm plumping (pun intended) for Peter but will give Toney his well-deserved due if he manages to hold off the young, hungry slugger for twelve rounds.
Toney's abilities are as strong as ever but his supporting attributes (strength, speed and stamina) are atrophying with every fight and every year. He said he would knock out every fighter he has faced in the run up to fights but has lost both title fights. With a long, excellent career he has nothing to be ashamed about obviously but I think he doesn't have enough in the tank to cope with Peter.
Don't care if I'm wrong though.
Good luck to both fighters and HUGE credit to Toney for taking this fight.
Personally I don't think Peter is any stronger than Rahman, the difference is that Rahman knows he has stamina problems and chose not to use his size and strength to it's full potential against Toney. I think Peter will land some hard shots on Toney's gloves for the first few rounds and then fade badly and be used for a speed bag for the rest of the fight. I know Peter hits hard but I would be very surprised if he even hurt Toney because of the way he telegraphs his punches so much, Toney by lopsided decision.
Please Toney. Either come in and take care of business and show Peter what its like to be a pro, or have your ass dragged out of the ring and make way for the "nightmare". The last thing I want to see is a flabby James Toney winning an uninspiring decision against Peter, it will surely hurt the division. I thought it was clear in the fight against Wlad that Peter is one hell of a puncher and a truly tough man. If he has Manny Stewart in his corner, its Corrie Sanders all over again for Wlad. During that fight Stewart gave Wlad specific instructions and insight on the fight while Peter's corner was saying stuff like "go get him". Seriously, Manny Stewart is like having an ace up your sleeve. But back to the Peter. I really hope this guy wins cause the heavyweight division needs him. Is there a better way to stake his claim by knocking out one of the slickest boxers in the last 20 years? I don't think so.
I think, if Toney comes into the fight, in the shape that he was to fight Holyfield, he will counterpunch Peter to a wide UD, if he's out of shape, I dont think he can pull it off.
I know a while back they supposedly asked Atlas to train him, and when Peter refused to seclude himself with Atlas and devote himself to training, Atlas said the hell with it...
