Gatti is nowhere near the most liked fighter ever. He is one of the more popular fighters today but Ali, Louis, Dempsey, Sullivan, and even Marciano were much bigger personalities and celebrities. The average person on the street knew Dempsey whether they watched boxing or not. That is not true with Gatti.

People did not like Larry Holmes after he beat Ali, at the time, he was very disliked by many for beating on a "over his prime" Ali.
Years later,Tyson came and beat an over his prime Holmes.
