  • Why does everyone hate James Toney?

hes funny and is a proven great fighter. one of the best fighters of this era.

you have to realise some of him is just an act.

im rooting for him to unify. and his willingness to "**** some ****in russian around."

i was on the toney bandwagon until his fights with ruiz and rahman. its not the fight with ruiz that made me not like him, it was the steroids and the aftermath. and in his fight with rahman, a fight he couldve easily won had he been in shape, he was well, not in shape, in fact horrible shape.

he doesnt train properly and he hasnt backed up his tough talk in years.

The guy's routine, once inspired and engaging, has become formulaic, Toney-by-numbers. His racial routines have now descended to comparing Sam Peter to a monkey. Okay, Ali did this, but it doesn't make it any better. A Joke? Maybe, but a tasteless one.

I used to love the guy until very recently, but seeing him and Rock big themselves up over a dire fight in March left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Bottom line is, Toney's classless punk act is only funny when he backs up that attitude in the ring. This year he has not done so, despite his protestations otherwise.

Because no matter how old or fat he is, he's still one of the top 3 most skilled fighters in the world easily.

He has weight problems, shows no respect for anyone in or around the sport including fellow fighters, and is inarticulate and almost impossible to understand during press conferences and interviews because of his lard distorted voice. If you want to be a loudmouth fighter with a ton of confidence and a chip on your shoulder, okay, but it sort of works out better if people can understand what the hell you're saying.

Toney just comes across as ignorant to me. Ignorant about the importance of managing his weight and the impact a lax diet can have on his career, and ignorant in regards to his views of the world. He just strikes me as a small minded guy. I'll admit he adds a lot of color to our sport as a heel that you want to see beaten into the ground, but I'd say that's about as much respect as I'll give him.

Really I find it impossible to like him. Same with Zab Judah. My question to you is, what is there to like? Toney is about as repulsive a character and as unlikeable as they come in my opinion. I mean his personality fails to make an positive impression on me on almost every level. When I do laugh at a Toney press conference, it's rarely with him.

I mean, even his lack of punching power at heavyweight completely destroys any chance of him living up to his boasts of being this angry Mike Tyson like destroyer. He could be a complete idiot and maniac outside of the ring, talk as much **** as he wants, and as long as he backs it up I'd respect him. But he doesn't. He talks like this dynamic power puncher but I just don't see it. At all. I mean you can't talk **** and hype your own punching power like you're the next Tyson and then go on to win a draw or decision. It doesn't work that way. Hell, Toney hasn't even scored a legit knockdown at heavyweight since he fought a shot Holyfield.

I just don't take Toney seriously as a heavyweight. Aside from his personality, which does rub the wrong way, I really think he's lacking as a heavyweight contender and a fight or two away from the end of his career.
