Round 2: Toney and Peter in another telephone brawl







By Paul Upham: Heavyweights James "Lights Out" Toney and Samuel "The Nigerian Nightmare"' Peter traded insults during a vicious media telephone conference call on August 8. It was Round 2 on Thursday and certainly not language suitable for children. The two going at it again down the phone line, as they prepare to meet in the ring on September 2 in a WBC title eliminator at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, USA on Showtime Championship Boxing.

Toney turned 38 years of age today and was in no mood to be messed with, while waiting for featherweights IBF champion Eric "Mighty Mouse" Aiken and Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero to finish talking to the media.

"C'mon man!" yelled Toney. "No more questions. I'm here now. Let's do this. It's my birthday. I don't want any of this **** waiting for you."

Peter's manager Ivaylo Gotzev didn't waste any time throwing some fuel on Toney's fire.

"We have a big birthday cake for James," he said. "Sam is going to jump on him and knock him out. That's Sam Peter. We look forward to that September 2. We're ready. Sam is in the greatest shape of his life."

"**** you very much *****!" replied Toney 69-4-3 (43). "On September 2, this is going to be a real fight. I hope Sam Peter keeps his promise to come try to knock me out. I've got something for him. It ain't going to happen. No one going to put my ass down. It ain't going to happen. I ain't nobody to play with. I ain't one of those fake mother-****ers. I will take your ass out!"

A question from SecondsOut radio's Eddie Goldman to 25 year-old Peter 26-1 (22) sparked the call into a verbal brawl involving promoters, managers and boxers.

Toney: Why you letting him do all the talking?

Peter's promoter Dino Duva: Why don't you let Sam answer the question?

Toney: Hey *****!

Duva: Let Sam answer the question.

Toney: Hey *****!

Peter: You can't hear what he is saying. Let me answer the question.

Duva: Hey Dan. Either you let Sam and people answers questions or we are going to hang up.

Toney's promoter Dan Goossen: But Dino, remember, he (Toney) wasn't the one that started this, OK.

Duva: I don't care! Let the people answer the questions or we are going to hang up.

Goossen: Dino, I have got no problem with that. Let him speak, but let Ivaylo and you not say anything. If the fighters want to bad-mouth each other, let them do it.

With the intense feeling between Toney and Peter and their teams, next week's press conference with both boxers present in person should be very interesting.

"I have been in with the best and I have seen it all," said Toney. "He's going to war. I'm going to put that fire out for him."

"I'm ready to go. Whatever takes it to win," said Peter.

"This fight is going to put James at the top of the heavyweight division," said Goossen. "Not below the champions, but at the top. You are going to see how great a fighter he is."
