Floyd Mayweather vs Julio Cesar Chavez: Resume.

I think Mayweather's resume is excellent, sure I could pick a few things, but I can do that With any fighter in history.

I've seen many people talk about JCC about him fighting the best after the best, and really bigging up his resume, saying had he retired when unbeaten he would be regarded the best ever.

Now, I've just looked through this and had Mayweather faced this lot, he'd be absolutely ridiculed. Why are the older generation fighters held to lower standards when it comes to those they beat?

Opponents overall records listed to the right

    Mayweather first ten opponents W78-L55
JCC first ten - W1-L7 (seven debutants!)

Things of note from both guys' first ten fights.

Mayweather has an ordinary first ten opponents, with two debutants. Chavez has a very poor first ten opponents. Incredibly seven debutants, and maybe even more so, only one win combined from his first ten opponents.

    Mayweather 11-20 - W233 -L57
    JCC 11-20 - W62-L47

Mayweather's next ten, he fights only one opponent with a losing record. Beat a former world title challenger (Tony Pep), before winning the WBC world championship vs Genaro Hernandez, defending his belt vs Angel Manfredy and Carlos Rios.

JCC, fought two more debutants, another three had losing records, no notable wins.

    Mayweather 21-30 - W387-L31
    JCC 21-30 - W82 -L74

During this period Mayweather beat Diego Corrales, Carlos Hernandez, Jesus Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo x2, as well as five other title defences and one non-title fight.

JCC, from fights 21-30, JCC still managed to find another five guys with losing records, topped off with five journeyman with winning records.

    Mayweather 31-40 -W398 -L35
    JCC 31-40 -W111 -L84

Mayweather has wins over Ricky Hatton, Oscar De La Hoya, and Juan Manuel Marquez, as well as wins over Zab Judah, De Marcus Corley, Phillip Ndou, and even Gatti, Baldomir and Mitchell were decent wins.

JCC faces ten more journeyman. I found this incredible that at forty fights, he makes Wilder's resume at the same stage look like Evander Holyfields.

    Mayweather 41-50 - W306 -L25
    JCC 41-50 - W188 -L46

Mayweather beat his career long rival Manny Pacquiao (aged 38 to Pac's 36) very clearly on points. Gave Canelo Alvarez his first and only loss in a masterful display.

Beat Maidana twice, beat Cotto, as well as okay wins over Berto, Guerrero, and a novelty win and major payday vs McGregor.

Chavez fights a debutant in his fortieth fight. Yes, I know Mayweather fought McGregor, but that was a crossover even and a major, major payday, this was just JCC choosing to fight a boxer debutant.

On His 50th fight he faced Roberto Collins W2 L15. He did however win the WBC world title on his 42nd fight over Mario Martinez, the first good win of his career.]

Other good wins came over Ruben Castillo and Roger Mayweather.

    JCC 51-60 - W345 -L71

This list of fights is very underwhelming for this stage of his career. It includes a MD win over decent journeyman Rocky Lockridge.

    JCC 61-70 - W294 -L35

Good wins over Angel Luis Ramirez, Alberto Cortes, and Meldrick Taylor, but why is he fighting Ramon Arambaru W0 L1 in his 66th fight? And Akwei Addo W5 L3 in his 70th fight?

    JCC 71-80 - W272 -L36

Wins over Angel Hernandez, Kyung Due Akn, and John Duplessis, with two more very lowly journeyman thrown in to boost his record.

    JCC 81-90 - W347 -L35

Some good wins here, Frankie Mitchell, Hector Camacho, Marty Jakubowski, Andy Holligan, and a draw with Pernell Whitaker. In amongst this he still found the time to fight Bruce Pearson, W10 L10.

    JCC 91-100 - W366 -L42

Suffers his first defeat to Frankie Randall, he wins the rematch. Beats Meldrick Taylor in rematch, and Giovanni Parisi, David Kamau follows, then he is beaten by Oscar De La Hoya, before beating Joey Gamache.

    JCC 100- 110 - W509 -L67

A draw with Miguel Angel Gonzalez, before beating Ken Sigurani. Losing once more by Oscar De La Hoya, beat Marty Jakubowski, then loses on points as he is outsmarted by Willy Wise W23 L 6.

He beats Buck Smith, before a TKO lost to Kosta Tszyu.

    JCC 111 - 115 - W175 -L44

Very old now. These fights are barely worth mentioning. He wins the trilogy over Frankie Randall, and loses his last fight to Grover Wiley.

I know JCC is old in some of these later fights mentioned, but even if you ignore these past prime fights, you have to admit, his resume, is nowhere near what people try and have you believe.

And I think we need to put this myth, of the best used to always fight the best, to bed.

Mayweather's resume is ten times better than Chavez's

Well written thread. Floyd's resume is clearly better. I think he beats Chavez head to head from 130 to 147. Thanks for posting this!

Thanks. I think with the older generation fighters, a lot of people just seem to assume they were fighting killer after killer.

I've seen many modern fans who claim to be big on JCC, claim this, and as you can see, it's clearly not the case.

Yet Mayweather's resume gets discredited, yet it's miles better than Chavez's, and there's no way to argue against that when you stack up the facts.

You make a good case for Mayweather having the better record. One thing that helped Mayweather achieve his great record is he always stayed in great condition even between fights and never gained much weight or got out of shape. He still lives that way even in retirement. This helped him fight well at an age when many boxers are completely shot. Part of Mayweather's excellence in old age might just be good genes but part of it is his great life style for an athlete 24/7/365.

Chavez beating a prime Meldrick Taylor, beats anything and anyone Floyd has on his resume. Hatton was a brawler, Canelo wasn't quite prime yet, Cotto Manny and Shane were half baked.

He snatched Mel's soul. Sorry to say.

That's a good point you make however, Taylor wasn't a better fighter than Mosley ( who took Margarito's soul). Pac man would have sparked Taylor,(similar to what he did to Hatton). I liken Taylor to Judah's level imo.

I disagree. Taylor's only notable wins are Buddy Mcgirt, Aaron Davis, and...Rockin' lol.

Quite possibly the dumbest way to compare resumes. Let the facts remain, Chavez still holds the record for most title fights, most title fight wins, most defenses of title and tied for second with most knockouts in title fights. But yea, beating the Robert Guerrero’s and Victor Ortiz makes Floyd’s resume better.
