Has the European title ever been important?

The European title is by most considered a minor belt and most people rarely know who holds the European belt in any division.

Did it ever hold any value? Is their any history behind the title?

I think it once held importance as a stepping stone towards the World Title. Schmelling and Johansson were European champions before challenging for the World title, for example. Also, Randy Turpin was some sort of European champ before he got the Sugar Ray Robinson fight.

Today, eh, who knows what belt/title means what to whom.

By the time the EBU title is important in history it is a world title.

How important are the world titles no one recognizes today?

The EBU champions who were world champions are not today considered world champions, just claimants.

The NSC champs fall in the same.

If the EBU world title mattered to you I imagine you'd see non-champ George Godfrey and holder of the EBU World HW championship as a champion.

Unfortunately for the EBU and NSC we see lineal, you know, the made up term that came from historians long after the fact, as the legitimate title and the body titles as just claimant or pretense titles.

As far as the EBU as a regional, since it became a regional it's world is the WBC. WBC rating are EBU world ratings....officially. What the EBU title gets the champion is an automatic ranking in the WBC top world ranks. I believe it's 1-10 but could be 1-15.

So, kinda? In all regards, just kinda, at best.

Edit - sorry I didn't make one thing clear. Back when the EBU had world ranks and sanctioned world fights they were important in their day. Since then historians have stripped their importance and we carry on that stripping now. There was a time when the EBU controlled boxing more than anyone or thing else, we just don't see that as important.
