Iirc this was already reported in 2019 and Beterbiev who was in line to fight Gvozdyk was Canelo’s first choice. Canelo and Team must have thought Beterbiev is a bum since he got floored by Callum Johnson. After the Gvozdyk fight no one wants a part of Beterbiev.

My thoughts are it never happened. If it had happen about a year and a half ago it would have been big news and widely reported by the media that closely follows an reports Canelo's every move. What was well reported is Canelo was targeting Kovalev and not interested in fighting any of the other 3 undefeated lightweight champions. Just a few days ago Canelo made a statement that he would only fight at 168 because his coach thought he would be giving away too much to fight at 175. So now after all this time has past somebody is saying Canelo offered Beterbiev a fight back in 2019 and Beterbiev turned it down. BS.

What is apparent is somebody is making up BS about a year and a half too late and Canelo only targeted Kovalev and no other light heavyweight champion and this was well known and well reported. Beterbiev was never offered a Canelo fight so he never turned down a Canelo fight. If this had happened it would have been big news back then, not today. The media follows and reports Canelo's every move.
