  • Did you know Oscar De La Hoya and Sugar Ray Leonard almost fought in 1997

But Hector Macho Camacho spoiled that fight by beating Sugar Ray Leonard and landed the De La Hoya fight.

I think Sugar Ray wanted Oscar to go up to middleweight form welterweight, I forgot how much of a cherry picker Ray Leonard could be he was the first guy to demand stipulations and even fought for a title at a catchweight.

Oscar would've knocked him out with a jab, right?

A “cherry picker” who fought and beat a prime Benitez, prime Duran, prime Hearns and an 11 year undefeated Marvin Hagler.

      Unbelievable...

Ray was beyond shot by 97. Easy fight for Oscar, nice name for the resume and a big payday for both.

Leonard showed in that fight with Macho that he had no legs, and his balance recovery had gone, he's lost his power, in fact he looked older than 40, more like a hard-used 50. Macho had no trouble with him really at all.

I recall that, at some interview or other, that Camacho gave, Leonard must have been there, because I distinctly can see Macho leaning over th ropes invitingly, beckoning, and saying "Come and get some more sugar, Sugar," grinning all over his face. It was really astonishing to see how bad Leonard was, for such a top flight fighter.

Oscar would have destroyed him from the very first minute.

He rematched duran right away cause he knew he was partying and not training. Like ruiz-aj situation.
If you really look at history AA's are the biggest cherrypickers.

The main reason he rematched Duran was to get that W back.

The only guy SRL avoided for a while was Hagler.

He and his team delayed the Hearns fight for about 18 months but he still fought an absolute peak Hearns.

I love Ray, but Oscar would have obliterated Leonard at that time.

Prime Oscar at 147, still a 50/50 fight. People hate on Oscar, but Oscar was a great fighter at 47. Ray never fought anybody with that type of ferocity, IQ, and tempo at 47.
