I think boxrec has him overrated at number 31. He should be down in the 100s like all the other mediocre guys Belanga has fought so far. He has a poor record and has already been KOed twice. In his last fight he won a split decision over a 39 year old with 12 wins and 6 losses. He is just another cherry pick. If Berlanga is supposed to be a Canelo beater they are being very cautious the way they are matching him. With boxers only fighting once or twice a year really good fighters are moving up in fewer fights. Other good fighters have won world titles in far fewer pro fights than Berlanga has had. He should be fighting other hot prospects who are undefeated like he is. Whoever decides who he fights is playing it very slow and safe. What are they so afraid of? When does he fight an undefeated dangerous opponent who can fight and punch and take a punch?
Edgar Berlanga vs Demond Nicholson

Hell, so far they have not matched him into anyone good enough to even spar with Benavidez. Berlanga is clearly a big puncher but he has yet to prove he is a very good all around fighter who can win wars against good tough boxers who can punch and take a punch. Can he take a punch? Has not had his chin tested because of the soft opposition he fights.Comment

It is a good step up fight. The problem is these guys are being so hyped that fans don't seem to understand Berlanga is still a prospect. This is exactly the type of fight Berlanga should take nextComment

Agreed.
But NSB will keep on hyping Berlanga as the next top guy based on the 'eye test'.Comment

I like it. Good step up, but not too big of a step up. Demond gots his own power, 11 of 20 KO's in the 1st round himself, 20KO's in 23 W's so this could be fun early. But he's not got any notable W's although given some rounds to some notable cats while not getting the W. Plus he's been KO'd two times, but not til the 6th or later so maybe he can give Edgar a few rounds finally.
TR is great at these ministeps upward that almost always seem like the perfect or near perfect next opponent for a promising prospect.Comment
