If it was a big deal then its context wouldn't be nonchalant.
TBH, I know very little about this and only picked it up while following the fall of roman boxing (pyx), when christians made boxing illegal in the 300s AD, to the rise in the 17th century. During that period christians records are the best kept records for anything like boxing. Once it becomes illegal the people getting in trouble for doing it are recorded by those administering said trouble. You pick up some things while going through stuff like that. Gays not being persecuted before boxers were was one of them.
That said, I seriously doubt it was a big deal in the middle period because it wasn't written about as if it was a big deal, and, I know christians change their values over time. Hell, I just kind of pointed one out. Boxing.
