You bring up some good examples showing a diversity of quitting. It was an interesting read. I like the fact that you highlighted Vitali Klitschko against Byrd and the fact that the Eastern European mentality is very different, and that, in turn, allowed Klitschko to be at peace with walking away with his first loss.

There is also the fact that the American fans and media have spoen out so much on the Klitschko brothers fighting one another's battles in the ring, when really, for them, the mentality is that a victory for one is a victory for all regardless of who achieves it.

Now there's one in the balls for capitalism.

Duran just wanted no part of Leonard's jive ass bull****. He figured that Leonard was not being a man and standing there to fight it out as it should be. Kind of bull**** of Leonard to not be able to beat the man by fighting and so he resorts to clowning like that. Well, Duran is the only one that had to live with walking away, so it's cool.

In the end, a fighter has the final say, and is the only one that can truly determine when enough is enough. If done properly, I see no reason why people should get so upset about it. Unless they want to shut their mouths and get in there to take that **** themselves.

        another great article!
i especially like the last paragraph!

The code of the fighter dictates that a boxer be a warrior, ready to give his life in search of success. When a fighter signs that figurative contract with the fans to become a boxer, he agrees to go out and defend his honor until he can give no more. It is the law of the fraternity, and it is expected to be observed by all fighters.

as soon as i read it i was thinking of tommy hearns being carried out the ring like a baby after going through 3 rounds of hell with marvin hagler!!
then at the post fight press confrence smiling with awe at what a great fight it had been!

        like i said good article!

good stuff. i liked it like all ur other stuff. it was ur first one in a while though...

What do u take on LISTON clearly taking a dive in the first round against ali??? 1 round surely insnt enought to get frustrated or injured, but he clearly quit the fight?

a lot say all the damage done to liston mentally, was done outside the ring and before the fight, where ali made fun and intimidated liston. what are ur thoughts?

Yeah, I always need to have articles or I feel lazy LOL.

With Liston-Ali, it wasn't anything to do with the punch. I really don't know what to make of what happened there, I guess it was something you had to be there to really judge. Of course Liston was discouraged by the first fight, but its what happened in between the fights that really intrigues me. Liston was in excellent shape for the rematch, and then came the delay because of the craziness going on.

I think the delay caused Liston's aging body to set in and he had little to offer on the night of the fight. It became immaterial as Liston went down on the end of a punch that couldn't hurt a fly. We may never know exactly what happened, but it seems very su****ious IMO. I think it may have been Liston looking for a quick payday and not wanting to get his ass kicked again. Look at the Leotis Martin fight, the second he go hit there he gave up.

It was purely mental what happend that night he had a breakdown from all the mind games.

Nice Article but I think you need to add something in there about Corners and there responsibilty in all this. What are the minimal expectations that fighters should have for there corners. At some point in these fights I think it is the responsibilty of the corners to stop the fight and let there fighter keep his health and his pride. This is for some of the instances not all.

For example I think Lacey's corner should've thrown the towel and kept there man from getting beaten from pilar to post and ding to ding of every round. Lacey was young and prideful with great conditioning but a beating like that has the potential of ruining a fighter.
