Boxing gym owner in Minnesota has LOST $800K+ since March

Boxing Club Owner Pushed to Brink:

‘I Have Nothing Left to Lose’ https://link.theepochtimes.com/mkt_a...e_3659897.html

MINNEAPOLIS—Mark Royce and his wife began 2020 with three boxing clubs and a yoga studio. All four businesses were flourishing and two of the boxing clubs were on the market as they sought to downsize.

By the end of 2020, after months of severe shutdowns imposed by the governor, they had one barely-surviving boxing gym and the yoga studio was squeaking by. They’d been forced to offload the other two boxing gyms in July for peanuts just to get out of the leases, which demanded more than $10,000 a month at each location.

Now, they’re entering 2021 unsure of how they’ll pay $3,500 for January’s rent on the boxing gym after squaring away the utility costs.

“The problem we face here is we have a large loan, and the loan is tied to our house,” Royce told The Epoch Times on Dec. 30, 2020.

Gyms and fitness centers have been one of the hardest hit industries in Minnesota as Gov. Tim Walz deemed many small businesses “non-essential” during the pandemic.

Royce has felt forced to open his gym for boxing classes despite the lockdown orders and he’s covered his floor-to-ceiling windows with paper to stave off the number of people who look in and then call the authorities on them.

“I’m going to teach classes whether the governor says it’s okay or not. This is the only way we can make a living. That’s what our business model is,” Royce said. “Technically we could do virtual classes still, but … you can’t hit a virtual boxing bag.

“I’m fed up and I’m done. I have nothing left. They’ve taken everything from us. They [********s] destroyed our business this year. They did. Not a virus. The virus did not do this."
Don't know of any pro boxers that went here, but it makes you wonder how hard guys like Roach are getting hit.

20,000 a month for two rents on two boxing gyms? This guy is a world class bad businessman. I'm sure he was deep in the red already.

Roach? He's a mega millionaire with one little gym.

See, the government is saving people. Lol.

About 5 years ago people started taking boxing fitness on as a trend, this man was banking on it as many fitness industry people began shifting to boxing gyms, it was part of UFC fitness gyms packages and it was doing good for a bit, so to answer your question: I'm not so sure these guys would have counted on pro fighters making their gyms a home but on occasion maybe some of the pro fighters in the area might have utilized it, either way the collapse of gyms is happening across the board

Also, I don't think Freddy counted on his gym as his main source, as I recall he has a small fee for training for the day(I think it's 5 or 10 bucks) and he closed session for his pro fighters,,, I would guess he doesn't have a 10000 a month lease

He probably owns the building and the 3-4 next to it, as well as getting rent from all the occupants. I can't see him spending a dime, and he made about $20 or more mill in his cut from Pacquiao alone.

And, in a different scenario, since he's been there for so many years, his rent -if he rents- must have been small, and only allowed to increase by small amounts, which don't even keep up wit the costs of devaluation of the dollar. And, any fool and his dog, having decided to stay there, would have bought the place 15-20 years ago.
He has lawyers, who probably cost him a lot more than any "rent". Anyway I don't believe he pays rent, This last was just a speculation.

In Southern California there are Alot of boxing gyms that shut their doors and will never open again.
Most are run by the city , sheriff's or get some sort of funding from the city.
The private gyms still operating low key. But it's sad to see a great resource for the youths in these communities be shut down.

                  Fear's a muthaf***er.

                    Interesting take on it.

I found out many years after that my dad was one of three police officers who pooled their money in the early 70's to build a youth center to get kids off the streets, the first of the area and is still standing to this day.

Neither of my parents ever told me that story - and to this day, I think my dad is scum of the earth, BUT that action was to be respected.

Crime may be an unintended side effect of gyms like this closing; because you can't keep these troublemakers off the streets.
