GL: The last time we spoke shortly after your victory over Ike Quartey you didn't really know who or what was going to be next. Is there any update yet? " Well, I was reading this article where De La Hoya spoke to Quartey and gave him a phone call telling him he was robbed. I know Oscar with Golden Boy Promotions, their aim is to clean up boxing and now that he's trying to not only be a fighter and a promoter, but the judges and the referee he could get out there and vindicate Quartey whenever he's ready. If you look at it I'm the only one of his era that he hasn't fought and he's the only one from our era that I haven't fought. Since he wants to be the judge, jury and ref and he wants to clean up boxing just step up to the plate and let's get it on."
GL: In other words you're calling out Oscar De La Hoya since he's talking about you behind the scenes, correct?
Vernon Forrest: "I've been the kind of guy to call guys out because if they're going to step up they're going to step up anyway, but on this rare instance I'm not talking behind his back I'll tell him in his face. If he feels as though as he could clean everything up let's make it happen."
GL: After you beat Shane Mosley the second time there was a great deal of interest in De La Hoya-Forrest, but the fight never got done. Do you feel the fight is more realisitic now than it was then?
VF: "Let's be real, he beat the man who beat the man, but I beat the man who beat the man. So since we both beat the men, it's a natural fight anyway. He an I came up together, we were both on the Olympic team in 1992. He was a 132 pounder and I was a 139 pounder. He's a world champion and multi-time world champion and so am I. We both know each other well so it's a natural fight."
GL: Some boxing critics believe Oscar only fights the marquee opponents after they've suffered a loss at the hands of another fighter or after he feels they've slowed down...
VF: (cutting in) "Come on now G, everyone in boxing knows that's always been his MO since he fought Julio Cesar Chavez."
GL: With that being said since you've lost twice since the second Mosley win and Oscar feels you lost to Quartey...
VF: (cutting in again) "I see where you going and yep, I definitely fit the profile so there definitely shouldn't be no problem with it now. (laughs) But what's funny to me is that he's saying Ike got robbed against me but I know more than a few people who feel Ike really got robbed against him."
GL: What's the difference between you and the other guys who fit the profile that he's been victorious over?
VF: "I'm a professional, and if he really thinks I've slipped a bit there's only one way to find out."
GL: Everyone wants to fight Oscar, if something can't happen with De La Hoya, who else would you like to fight?
VF: "We've got a few people lined up, but as you know I don't negotiate through the media. The guys who we're looking at will get a phone call from the big dog if something comes up. But when something comes up you know you're my man so you're going to be the first to know, but those guys will be getting phone calls when the time is right."
GL: Winky Wright has a December 2 PPV date, is it unrealistic to expect you back in the ring that soon?
VF: "Winky is my dawg and we get along well. My thing is money talks and bull**** runs a marathon so if the money is right it's something we could talk about, but I don't see it happening."
GL: Does your body feel like you could return to the ring before the end of the year?
VF: "It all depends on the money. I'm putting this out there for De La Hoya because this is a fight that we should have gotten to a few years ago."
GL: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing?
VF: "To all my fans, I appreciate all of your well wishes. I appreciate all fans of boxing and I want to let y'all know you still haven't seen the best of Vernon Forrest."
