Comments Thread For: Haney: Campbell's Not A Pushover, But I Just Feel Like Ryan's Gonna Beat Him Easy

Devin Haney respects Ryan Garcia's ambition. Haney realizes Luke Campbell is clearly the best boxer Garcia will have faced in 21 professional fights. The WBC world lightweight champion considers Campbell a "talented" fighter whose experience and ring generalship make him a credible foe for his 22-year-old rival.

Aside from the fact that Campbell’s reputation as a pro has been built on clearly losing two fights, he’s hasn’t fought in a year and half and was diagnosed with COVID not even 3 weeks ago. If Garcia doesn’t win impressively, it’ll be a horrible look for him.

That’s actually the angle I see this fight in. We keep hearing people talking about this being some kind of reveal moment for Garcia when he’s the one who has always won impressively and it’s Campbell who has never one when he stepped up to championship level. Lewis vs Ruddock was a lesson in giving people too much credit for “losing well.”

exactly. Great point. I always think of Ruddock when guys get credit for losing performances. People thought it’d translate into his fight with Lewis and he got washed and this could be another case with Campbell.

I was looking forward to this fight tonight but I just think Campbell is going to get caught early and stopped and then everyone is going to over hype Garcia. I want to see Garcia fight Lopez or Tank or Haney, guys with power. If someone is looking for Garcia to get exposed, it’s not happening tonight.

I know what Haney means. Garcia could get Campbell out of there early if he catches him.

But it's not like Garcia has been in with as good fighters as Campbell has. If Campbell is there after round 6 he could drown Garcia who is a high energy fighter.

Yeah but everyone with power looks good their first few fights. Campbell has no power. He's had to learn how to box in all situations - not just going forward. I think Garcia wins but actually wiping Campbell out early could be the worst thing for Garcia. He needs to get some rounds in against a decent boxer before he takes on the elite guys

I’ve just chosen Luke in the Pick’em, but closer we get, I can’t help but think exactly what you wrote. Even down to the post fight Interviews, I see Campbell mentioning Covid, saying he had too much time out the ring etc. And what you said about his reputation is also spot on. It has been built off of that. It’s strange how all build up people have said about we will see if Ryan is real deal etc, but he’s quite a healthy favourite to win.

I see this just as much a test of Campbell as it is Garcia.

I don’t at all disagree. He definitely would benefit from some rugged adversity tonight. Championship fights are no time for the first gut check....
