It makes way too much sense for both fighters.
Both have a lot to gain:
If Haney beats Lomachenko, he legitimizes his WBC belt and Lopez’s status of undisputed becomes disputed. He can get that money split closer than it would be now.
If Lomachenko beats Haney, he adds another title to his legacy that no one will remember is fake in 20 years. He’ll also have a great reason to eventually get his rematch with Lopez. (The wbc might even mandate it!)
Both also have nothing to lose:
If Haney loses to Lomachenko, he was just too green to beat Lomachenko. He’ll just get back in line and eventually get another shot at a title. No one will hold it against him and he would probably be a mandatory quickly.
If Lomachenko loses to Haney, he can just remind everyone that he’s a natural featherweight, move down to 130 and win titles there. Everyone will talk about how great he is and how amazing it was that he was able to unify at 135 when he should be at 126. And he has plenty of nice fights between 122 and 130 to make.
