I was surprised to see Joe Smith was nominated for fighter of the year by the boxing writers association of America along with Canelo, Tank, Fury, Teo, and Spence.
Obviously he's not going to win, but, when you think about it, he really did have an amazing 2020, going 2-0 in 2 fights where he was a pretty big underdog and where most people only fought once.
Fighters aren't just measured by talent but how well they can bounce back from adversity. Some of the most talented fighters in boxing never have the careers they could have cuz they crumble the second they deal with a hard fight.
Smith came back from a one sided loss to Bivol by beating Jesse Hart, in a fight where he was expected to lose. Then he dominates Elder Alvarez in his next fight, another fight he was supposed to lose and against a former world champion.
Let's give it up for this hard hitter from Long Island, and cong**** on your well deserved nomination for FOY.
